An engaging story, shedding light on harsh realities

I was delighted by this book. What a hurricane of a read. I am from the area of Washington that is depicted in the story, so it was really fun to read about all of these places that I know. It added another level of realism to the story for me.
The writing style is unique- it made me feel like I was sitting in front of Gia, just listening to her. I liked that you are hearing her tell about her past self; you really get the sense that she has grown into a different person and has a lot of empathy for her younger self. The style was personal and conversational. I feel I really know this character now, in an incredibly deep way.
This story deals with a lot of hard topics: everything from the discovering of one's own sexuality, to child abuse, to self harm. All of these topics are dealt with in a way that is delicate and yet explicit enough to see them for what they are.
Cannot wait for the next book in the series! Bravo!
