Even mean girls have a story to tell...
Gia is a mean girl. This is her story. It begins with a choice, between the unthinkable and her twin brother’s life. She did what she thought was best and lives with the consequences. Secrets rule her life. The pain and psychological chaos are heavy burdens she cannot bear.
A mother with mental illness, a father with no room in his life for her, and her grandmother’s religious dogma all fuel Gia’s belief that she is bad and broken. She hides the pain as best she knows how, but her rage at life burns within. Music and ambition are her only safety nets, but the secrets consume her.
Gia is a mean girl. She hurts because she is hurting. She frightens others because she is frightened. She humiliates people to forget her own humiliation. It’s time Gia’s side of the story be told. This is where it all begins. This is where Gia’s secrets are exposed.

The writing style is unique- it made me feel like I was sitting in front of Gia, just listening to her. I liked that you are hearing her tell about her past self; you really get the sense that she has grown into a different person and has a lot of empathy for her younger self. The style was personal and conversational. I feel I really know this character now, in an incredibly deep way.
This story deals with a lot of hard topics: everything from the discovering of one's own sexuality, to child abuse, to self harm. All of these topics are dealt with in a way that is delicate and yet explicit enough to see them for what they are.
Cannot wait for the next book in the series! Bravo!
