I bought this model from Home Depot 5 years ago and installed it on a small poured concrete base that I created. This box is sturdy (can probably give a vandilizing bat a run for its money) and secure. Locking mechanism makes it difficult to pry open easily (heavy duty doors).

Pro: Sturdy, good lock (secure), functional, spacious.

Con: Mail gets wet in storms. Buy some silicone caulk and run a bead under the roof to waterproof (some wasps moved in one year, they thought it was a good house - now they have to chew through some caulk to get in). Now 5 years old the paint is peeling off badly, I need to strip it, prime it, and recoat it, not happy about that but it's doable. Lock needs occasional WD-40 treatment, but no more than 1-2 times a year.

Was the same price 5 years ago that Amazon is offering it for now, so the economy has nothing to do with it's cost.

I wanted a decent looking box when I moved in to the new house, this one looked the part and provided the function I wanted (security and resistant to abuse).

I recommend, but only if you seal the openings under the roof so your mail doesn't get wet. Manufacturer could have easily created a gasket to solve this problem but didn't.

Good luck in your secure mailbox searching.

Like the other reviewer, I've had similar problems with this mail box. In fact I can go one better. In assembling the mailbox pedestal there is a threaded rod that must be inserted to hold the various parts of the pedestal together. No problems there. What apparently wasn't allowed for in the original design is the differential heating and cooling between this threaded rod and the rest of the pedestal. That is, if everything heats up and cools down at the same rate - no problem. But here, in West Tennessee, recently we've had several days of cold weather that were just recently broken by some sunshine. Remember what I said about "differential heating and cooling"? Well, on that sunny day, the outside part of the pedestal heated slightly while that threaded rod remained cold. Since warmer metal expands, what happened is that the top mount (where the rod attaches to the outside part of the pedestal) broke - resulting in a mailbox that looks like it's "drunk". But I think that I can repair it with some epoxy glue. The repair should be almost invisible.

The good news is that my wife contacted the manufacturer and they're going to send me a new, re-designed model that has a sturdier base. Should have it in a few days.

However, unlike the other reviewer, mine has never leaked and the hardware and other fasteners have all worked quite well. Maybe they live in a place where there's a lot of blowing rain - though it would be tough for it to leak even then. Maybe they didn't assemble it right? My only problem was with the base, and it seems like that's been solved.

One caution though. If you do buy one, DON'T tighten the fasteners down like you would if this were made of steel.

Our whole Subdivision has these boxes. BIG mistake. The association forced us to buy it but with most of them Broken (cast aluminum chipped), Tilting (tension screw, poor design), Falling over (Postal carrier pushes a little to hard, cheap quality), it's everyperson for themselves :(. I have re-built twice, once on an extremely cold day where I froze my hands to put it back together, just so I could get my mail. When it rains mail gets wet. I currently have the leaning tower of Gibralta. Wating for the weather to get warmer to make a change.

I purchased this mailbox because I liked the fact that it locked AND it had an outgoing flag (a seemingly rare combination). I had no problem installing the mailbox, securing it in a concrete base that I poured. Like others have indicated, the base on this unit is terrible. Within a few months the mailbox was teetering from side to side. Every time it rained the mail got wet. I contacted the company to complain, and was promised that they would send a gasket to fix the water problem. They told me that they had a new redesigned pedestal, but that I would have to pay full price for it. The gasket never showed up. One particularly windy day the entire thing just fell over, the base having cracked right through. After considering if I should plunk another wad of cash at the same mailbox and a new base, or just start with something else, I opted to go looking elsewhere.

Low quality metal and poor packaging. This product was broken right out of the box. I tried to contact customer service and they refused to help with the part I needed or a replacement. I will be searching for an alternative product. Don't count on help from the manufacturer if you have a problem.

Very nice product! I mounted this mailbox on two 20" pavers sandwiched together with industrial outdoor adhesive and four SS 1/2" through-bolts I cut from a piece of drill rod stock. It looks fantastic, very nice quality. The only thing I didn't care for was the very small slot to receive mail through. The box looks to have a large front but in reality it's a small slot at the top of this and a locking side door which makes receipt and retrieving mail a bit of a challenge. We would rather have a larger input area and simple knob on the side door compartment. One workaround is to leave the key in it all the time so the mail person can leave large envelops and small boxes and so we don't have to find a key every time we wish to get our mail.
