SG Future Tribute

From the Manufacturer

SG Future Tribute

A Tribute to the Innovation at the Heart of the SG

Gibson USA is celebrating 2013 as the Year of Les Paul, and is blowing it up big with a new series of decade-dedicated Tribute SGs, each of which honors the artistry and innovation of inventor and guitarist Les Paul by capturing the essence of a great SG guitar from one of four different eras. All embody the full magic of this legendary guitar design, but are stripped down for improved value and no-nonsense performance.

The SG Future Tribute captures the look, feel, and tone of the guitar world's most legendary double-cutaway solidbody, and equips it for the player of the future, while making it available today. Primed for optimum playability and versatility, the SG Future Tribute carries a pair of "zebra-coil" '57 Classic humbucking pickups for a blend of vintage warmth and contemporary articulation, along with a superbly comfortable custom asymmetrical neck profile. Gibson's acclaimed bridge and tailpiece team up with futuristic Steinberger gearless tuners to ensure smooth playability and precise tuning and intonation. And, like all Les Paul and SG 2013 Tribute Series guitars, the SG Future Tribute is available upgraded with Min-ETune automated "robot" tuners for a nominal upcharge. The SG Future Tribute looks great in your choice of Heritage Cherry, Vintage Sunburst, or Ebony Black finish, all Vintage Gloss nitrocellulose lacquer.

Gibson SG Future Tribute
Solid, genuine mahogany neck features new asymmetrical profile that fits the human hand
Genuine Solid Mahogany Body and Neck

The SG Future Tribute takes the classic platform of the original SG Standards forward into the 21st century. Built in the image of the legendary SG Standards, the SG Future Tribute starts with a foundation of solid mahogany, a tonewood with a long tradition at Gibson. A solid mahogany body is crafted in the distinctive, thin asymmetrical dual-cutaway style, with iconic pointed "horns" and beveled edges to enhance playing comfort.

A solid mahogany neck is glued into the body in Gibson's time-tested tradition and carved to an ergonomic and superbly comfortable new asymmetrical profile that fits the natural shape of the human hand, with depths of .800" at the 1st fret and .875" at the 12th, making this one of the most playable SGs yet created. It is topped with a genuine rosewood fingerboard that carries 24 medium-jumbo frets to maximize the playing reach of the SG style, along with traditional trapezoid inlays. In keeping with the stripped-down ethos of this powerful performer, both body and 'board remain unbound, and there's no pickguard to obscure the finish. A PLEK-cut nut made from black Corian subtly complements the knurled chrome knobs and black pickup rings. The headstock is silkscreened with gold Gibson and holly logos.

'57 Classic and '57 Classic Plus Humbuckers

The SG Future Tribute ensures its sonic versatility and hot looks with a pair of zebra-coil humbucking pickups, consisting of a standard-wound '57 Classic humbucker in the neck position and a slightly over-wound '57 Classic Plus in the bridge position for hotter lead tones. The '57 Classics recreate Gibson's esteemed PAF humbuckers by using genuine Alnico 2 magnets and 42-AWG enamel-coated wire. They are also enhanced with evenly matched coils for a smooth, singing tone, and wax potting to combat microphonic squeal at high volume levels. The result is a pickup that is thick, rich, and warm, yet clear and articulate—perfect for the broad demands of today's music.

Tune-o-Matic Bridge and Steinberger Gearless Tuners

The traditional wiring complement of an independent volume and tone control per pickup plus a three-way toggle selector switch allows a broad range of sonic variations. To anchor it all down, Gibson USA loads in a classic Tune-o-Matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece, then rams it all into the future with a set of super-efficient Steinberger gearless tuners, a hardware set that partners up for solid sustain and precision tuning.

Put it all together, and the SG Future Tribute presents the perfect celebration of the SG for the 21st century, wrapping it all into a great guitar that brings the look, feel, and sound of a contemporary SG to the hands of the demanding players of today, and tomorrow.

What's in the Box?

This guitar has the sweetest neck on it of any guitar I have ever played. It of course needs to be set up first. This guitar has the A asymetrical 60s slim profile neck. Incredibly fast. This is my second one. I wanted to buy one in case they didn't make it anymore. The PICKUPS are just okay, I changed them into the Ironman's. I put a Kayler TREMOLO bar on mine because I wanted to hot rod it. The reason I bought this guitar was the neck, there has never been an SG in my opinion that plays like this one.

A great looking and great playing guitar. I prefer this SG with no pickguard, though it looks killer with one too.

The pickups play very well (though I am not a pickup expert) the bridge is very hot (loud/active) for some reason and the neck very mellow, so the pickup control works well. There are 2 volume controls and 2 tone controls, which I'm not that excited about. 1 volume control would seem easier to use. The pickups are (standard for Gibson) 2 wire. 4 wire would be nicer for coil splitting, etc and the thin body makes adding pullpots kinda a pain, but I plan to add SD Triple Shots to the pickups, which are easier to use anyway.

The neck is thin and great playing, though it arrived rather dry it needs some conditioning. The 24.75" scale works perfectly for this size guitar without being too sloppy. However, the pickups being in the correct place for tone, and the neck being 24 frets makes for a rather "long" neck, or rather shifted to the left. When you look down (and you are not used to this guitar) you will find your head a few frets to the right of where you may expect to be. But having the 24 frets makes accessing the upper registers a breeze, especially compared to a Les Paul. The only disadvantage being that the 23rd and 24th frets are rather narrow.

The modern tuners work extremely well and natural, however look quite odd. Other options would be to change to standard Grovers or go with Tronical's Min-etune automatic tuners (Type M). I installed this on mine and it wasn't hard at all. Holes needed a bit of drilling, 7/16 bit seem to work fine on the A, D, G, and B holes. E and e holes lined up as-is.

This is my third guitar and my first 'real' instrument. It also represents the most money I've ever spent on an instrument.

Is it worth it? Yes. This guitar amazes me. It feels right and sounds incredible. In fact, every time I play it, I can't believe how good it sounds. And how easy it is to play. My hand glides up and down the fretboard. In fact, it's so much fun to play that I've doubled my practice time and look forward to sitting down with it every day.

I am a small woman, and this is a great guitar for a woman or anyone with small hands. It's lightweight, intuitive, responsive--near perfect. I'm still getting used to it and may have to adjust the strings to reduce some power chord buzzing (it comes with wrench, gig bag, etc.), but this guitar and I plan to have a long relationship together.

I knew I wanted a Gibson SG, and when the price dropped I grabbed it. No regrets.

I HAVE DIFERENT GUITARS, 2001 IBANEZ RG 570, 1998 PARKER FLY DELUXE AND SOME CHEAP AND MEDIUM GUITARS UPGRADE FOR ME WITH BETTER COMPONENT... BUT THE SG FUTURE TRIBUTE SURPRISE ME WITH IT MATURE SOUND... 57 & 57 PLUS PICKUPS ARE INCREDIBLE.. I LIKE SO MUCH THE ASIMETRICAL NECK... THE SG FUTURE TRIBUTE IS A NO CONVENTIONAL SG LOOK GUITAR... I LOVE THAT... BEYOND THE LOOK... THE SOUND AND FEEL IS TRADITIONAL AND IT IS A SOLID STANDAR OF ROCK... THE ONLY DETAIL IS THE GIGBAG... ITS FAR FROM THE GUITAR QUALITY...

PROS:
This is an extremely light guitar. I would venture to say that it feels like a shredder with it's fast neck, low action (pleked neck) and hot pickups. Acoustically it sounds fantastic. It has a very light nitrocellulose smell to it. This is like cotton-candy, if you're unaware. It doesn't have high gloss like a standard SG's but it's quite beautiful. It's lighter than my other SG. It has no binding or pickguard, which I like. The guitar is well balanced and very easy to play. I will say that it has better action than my other SG. The neck feels like a quality Gibson with no rough spots and terrific action.
I love the tuners. They are accurate and keep the guitar in tune very well.

CONS:
The pickups or electronics are not as good as my other Gibsons. I'm going to confirm this but there are some indications; when I pull back on the tone pots I get a dull muddy sound instead of a bassy warm sound. When the tone pots are full open the sound is harsh. My SG 61RI has a warmer richer sound. This sounds thinner, by comparison.

Even though it's 24 frets and the upper frets are easy to get to the SG 61 RI are even easier to get to. This is because the 61 sticks far out and the Tribute doesn't. Still easy to get to them and be a shredder.

Conclusion:
I can see modding this guitar, either the caps or even the pickups and pots to get the tone I'm after, but it's a keeper. The tone is more suited towards shredding and the guitar plays like a shredder, but it sounds fantastic unplugged, which gives me hope that it's the electronics. I don't believe the Classic 57's are the same as the 57's on my SG 61. I hope I'm wrong but will edit when I know for certain.
