A Compelling Portrait of the Hidden Faces of Justice
Steve Cole is a young public defense attorney with a long list of clients: Among them is Jeff Harris, who is facing a life sentence under a law that Steve believes is cruel and unfair. When Harris is presented with a plea bargain that would spare him a life sentence, Steve urges his client to accept. Steve is shocked when Harris turns down the plea bargain in favor of going to trial.
Steve quickly finds himself in the most difficult case of his career, in addition to all his other clients. Nevertheless, Steve grows to respect Harris and the decision he made, compelling him to work tirelessly for a not-guilty verdict for Harris.
Throughout the novel, author Bill Jaquette weaves his own thirty-plus years’ experience in public defense and provides readers with an intimate look at the day-to-day lives and struggles of public defense attorneys. The result is a compassionate portrayal of some of the most critical figures in the American courts, their clients, and the arduous and complicated role of maintaining justice.

The stories in this book are real and give a look behind the much overly maligned defense attorney you see nightly on TV. All are overworked with little time for accurate defense pleadings for their clients. If you cannot afford your own attorney you are given one from the list available at the time.
Perhaps they get you exonerated or perhaps not, either way your fate is in their hands. Read how several trials actually transpired to their conclusion.
Very interesting and eye opening. Written to be understood by anyone wanting to learn some of the hoops these defense councils must traverse to obtain justice for their clients of the day.
This book is a good read for anyone interested in learning more about the legal systems as it relates the stories of Steve Cole’s clients and their journey through the criminal justice system.
Gideon’s Grandchildren is an interesting read for anyone who is interested in learning how the legal system works. I enjoyed discovering how a public defender dedicates his/her time and energy to defend clients who cannot afford to hire their own attorney. It seemed overwhelming how many clients and their crimes that Steve Cole was working with at the same time. Each client had their own unique story. I was especially drawn into Jeff Harris’s story and the interaction of what he wanted and the Three Srikes Law.
The Epilogue was such an interesting end to this book. I never realized that a state like Washington created a table that determined how much time a defendant would have to serve based on their earlier crimes and the current one.
Needless to say I learned a lot about the legal system in Washington State while following Steve Cole’s work for his clients
Anyone who wants to know how our public defender system actually works should enjoy Gideon’s Grandchildren.
