From the Author

My goal in writing a Christmas novella was to touch my reader's heart with a story and characters that capture the true meaning of Christmas. I hope I have achieved this with "The Gift."

This is a great novella, perfect for the upcoming holiday season. It definitely helped get me in the mood to do all my Christmas wrapping, and wishing to go out to the mountains and see the winter wonderland.

Only thing I wish would be to make it longer, but I say that about almost all the books I read!

I wish it would have been longer but what CJ packed into this short novella was brilliant. Characters you right away related to and rooted for and a conflict that tugged at your heart. There's a reason Ms. Carmichael had published over 20 books with Harlequin Superromances and this is yet another shining example of quality writing at its best.

In The Gift we meet Amy who is trying to give Gray, her boyfriend, the perfect Christmas he has ever had. The next day she plans to break up with him. Messed up, right? Who does that?

This is a short story and a Christmas one so everything turns out prefect of course, however, there was a bit of mystery thrown in and even a touch of paranormal.

While getting the Christmas dinner ready on Christmas eve, Amy is thinking about how she would like a child and then there is a knock on the door. Lo and behold, it's a child. She is dirty, cold and obviously neglected. It takes a bit of a turn there with Dora there but, since I expect it with Christmas novellas I expected everything to work out. What happened to Dora was messed up though and to her mother? I couldn't imagine.

This was a good story for a short one and definitely a happily ever after. Super quick read at 36 pages but a good one.

It takes a skilled writer to weave such conflict and emotion into a short story. I read this in one sitting and finished the story with a smile on my face.

Set in the small town of Bandit Creek, The Gift is about the dilemma faced by a young kindergarten teacher, Amy Gold. It is a complex situation, made even more poignant by Amy's personal struggles and the difficult decision she's made about her relationship with Deputy, Gray Cassidy.

If you are looking for a short, emotional, feel-good read, then I think you'll enjoy The Gift!

It's a Christmas story about a little child showing up at the doorstep on a snowy night in Montana's Bandit Creek. It's a sweet romance between a kindergarten teacher and a local deputy. And it's a dilemma about what is the right thing to do.

CJ writes memorable characters and intricate plots, even in a novella length, and she's included several town residents you may have already met in the Bandit Creek series.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

I thought the story was good but you'd have to suspend reality to believe that a teacher would not call the cops when confronted with a runaway child that's been abused. Then for the police officer to become complicit after the fact is not realistic. Finally top it with attempting to run away with the child, to be stopped by the chief of police and told to take the child back to her house and put her to bed. It was just too unbelievable.

While I enjoyed it I had to question how unrealistically the story unfolded. So, suspend what you know to be the law and enjoy a quick read. I'm on the fence about trying another book by this author.

I'm not a big fan of the novella style books, usually because most of them I've tried were disappointing. But I liked this one. It touched the emotions and drew you in during the short time it had to do it. Sure, some have said that its kind of unlikely that a teacher would hold off taking this child to the authorities but I'm just chalking it up to the magic of Christmas and not pushing on that angle too hard. I just read it and enjoyed it.

A sweet and emotional read. In spite of the short novella length, this story packs a real emotional punch. A Christmas story about Amy Gold and Gray, the Deputy Sheriff in small town America, they are thrown for a loop when Dora turns up on Amy's doorstep on Christmas Eve.

I really enjoyed this story and will admit to holding back some tears at one point. An easy quick read but worth it.
