Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The central theme here--that hope endures despite crisis--is standard for the genre, but Melendez's story, from his Nicaraguan birth as an armless "thalidomide baby" to his musical performance before Pope John Paul II, is told with real power. The family's struggles, the move to America for medical reasons, his mother's single-minded faith, and his father's tragic disintegration under prejudice and oppression--all come vividly to life. Most moving of all is Tony's own stubborn joie de vivre. A shining tale, highly recommended.

Tony Melendez was born without arms and yet grew up to play guitar for the Pope!! His story is exceptionally inspirational and well written. Tony also has released a few gospel cds and his music is great. A true man of God who gives hope to all those who are different in some way.

It is a wonderful read. What is it like to grow without arms and a club foot? You will find out. What is it like to learn how to walk when you have no hands or arms to prevent a fall? It is also the story of a father who left his beloved homeland for America so he could help his son. This father was a patrician in his homeland. He had a college degree in horticulture and managed the sugar plantation. Coming to America was his only choice to help his son with the medical help he needed. It is the story of how menial low paying jobs and the concrete of LA took its toll on a man who loved nature and spent his time exploring the paradise of his native land and was a man of pride and prestige in his homeland. Now he is cleaning toilets and treated like a low life by his supervisor so he can help his son. The story is real. The family was dealt a tough hand and no punches are pulled. We learn the joys and heartaches of the Melendez family. Tony plays beautiful guitar. You can find his performance for the pope on youtube.
