Prince Niku comes to Hanyanoore with his father and two brothers as suitors for the princess. When Niku and his brothers come to Hanyanoore they battle an attack on the castle, and Niku battles an attack on Sarianna in particular. She is impressed with his heroism and with his manner and chooses him to be her husband.
Since Sarianna knows nothing about men she is determined to know Niku's body before they wed, and to keep her maidenhead in tact. To that effect they experiment with bondage, so that Sarianna can examine Niku's body without him losing control and forcing himself on her.
But not everyone is happy with Sarianna's choice. Niku's older brother, Armas is angry that he was not chosen and tries to assault Sarianna.
As they prepare for the marriage it comes to the couple's attention that many other royals from the land may not be happy with the union. It is after the wedding that the young couple has problems with the royals, who include Prince Rowsdowner, a former suitor for Sarianna, and Queen Taraasta.
The Gift of Surrender by D.L. Warner has a good plot and well-drawn characters. I thought the couple's love for each other was very real. And I thought Sarianna's desire to stay a virgin until marriage was good. The couple employed interesting tactics to see that she met that goal. But for me the story moved slowly and I found it hard to
stay focused. The Gift of Surrender was not the story for me.
