Life is never what you expect it to be. Sometimes it throws awful curves, other times it is an absolute blessing. The worst day of Natalie’s life leads her to pick up a much simpler life for the future. Jake’s accident costs him the career he loves, but in turn gives him his mother and his nephew and nieces to care for, letting him see how shallow his life had become. His new career as a MedEvac pilot rewarded him in a different way, and brought Natalie into his life, and brought him into hers. While it wasn’t love at first sight, it didn’t take long! It did however, take them a fair amount of time to realize and acknowledge it to one another. In the meantime, there was Natalie’s baby growing between them, quite literally! Even if it didn’t start out as his baby, it was as good as his by the time he helped bring it into the world!
A good read for anyone, but those into EMS and/or baseball will enjoy it that much more. The medical jargon used was accurate, but even if you don’t speak medicine, it isn’t hard to follow. Well worth my Saturday!
There were several scanning errors or misused words. For example, "tied" for "tired and "Jake" for "Hawk," Jake's nephew. There were also some scenes that seemed useless. They didn't move the plot, portray important characters, or add to the story in any way. Neither did I think it made sense that everyone left Natalie eight and a half months pregnant all alone in a remote mountain cabin in December. Her friends were all so protective of her and her unborn baby, I couldn't buy this part. Even though this is a clean, Christian novel, their faith wasn't an integral part but tended to be added at rare places with a brief comment.
The novel was interesting, and I did enjoy it, however. It was good not to have to wade through heavy cursing or highly descriptive sex scenes, and the two main characters, as well as Mary Claire and her three grandchildren, were enchanting. For the most part, this is a realistic romance along a rough path with ups and downs to a happy ending.
I loved how the author captured your attention right off and how quickly you got to know Natalie, Jake and his adorable nieces, and the folks at the EMS. These were delightful people who captured my heart. I adored how Jake took Natalie under his wing and become her birthing coach and how good these two were together. Although there is sorrow in this story, there is joy that comes forth that makes you feel good about having sat down and gotten to know these people in the "Gifts of Life".
This is book one in "The Gift Series" and I will begin book two next, "Gifts of Hope". Be prepared for trauma, but be encouraged by the tender love that develops between two wonderful people. Enjoy!
I would recommend this book to anyone who believes in second chance love. If you are looking for a "wham bam thank you madam book, this is not the book for you. If you want an exciting love story with twists and turns, this is it. Enjoy!
