Zero Issues

I am not going to go over the layout or specs, they have been covered. I am here to say I have had no problems with installing or using this board. It was easy to install, fired right up, and has been running problem free for over a month now.

I wanted to build a system for my basement entertainment area (man cave) but didn't want to mess around with overclocking or endlessly tweaking the system. I save that for my main box. However I did want a board that had the capability to be more in the future if I decided to repurpose it and this looked to fit the bill.

I stuck a new i5-4670, CM H 212 Evo cooler, Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1600 BLS2KIT8G3D1609DS1S00, Seasonic G Series 550W, and a single Geforce 670 and Samsung 840 SSD (that I had from upgrading my main box) in and old Antec P180 case that I had.

I am using Win 8.1, UEFI Boot, zero problems, happy camper. I will come back and update if I ever run into problems with this board but so far a motherboard that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Mixed feelings

I was dismayed to find that inspite of having 4 pin fan connectors it is not PWM and instead uses voltage regulation. It's not a big deal and some people like VR over PWM but VR is old school compared to PWM.

I had some issues with memory and some problems with the BIOS. And in general didn't feel confident with it.

I ended up returning it and spending more to get the Asus Z87M but it's been absolutely problem free and the Bios while not as pretty is easier to navigate an use. And the fan control was everything I wanted it to be.

While not an enthusiast, I did want some of the features of the Z87 chip. If all you want is a motherboard that works and has z87 features than this would probably be fine. But I don't regret the extra $40 I spent to get fundamentally the same feature set for something I'll have for 2 - 3 years. And if I find I do need more of an enthusiast board this one will be up to the challenge.

Not to say Gigabyte isn't good. I had an AMD board that I had for 3 years and never had an issue with and i ran it OC with just a couple of quiet case fans. I'm not the only one who thinks Gigabyte kind of missed the mark with their Z87 boards.

Exactly the features and configuration I wanted

I bought this board because it was the one z87 micro-atx board that had exactly the configuration I wanted at a reasonable price. It's not marketed for gamers (which makes it cheaper), but it's feature set makes it a great choice for someone looking to build a micro-atx gaming rig.

The x8 pci-e slot is not located in the last position, making it possible to install 2 graphics cards for 2-way SLI/crossfire in a 4-slot micro-atx case. This is the only non-gaming z87 micro-atx board I could find that had this slot arrangement.

All 6 of the SATA ports are at a right angle so they won't be blocked off by any graphics cards.

The CPU power connector is 8-pin to provide extra power for overclocking.

There are 5 fan headers: 3 for case fans, 1 for the CPU, and 1 extra header that can be used for another case fan, a second CPU fan or for a water pump.

The built-in Ethernet controller uses an Intel I217-V chip.

The board also seems to be very Linux friendly. I run Linux Mint 15 on it and all of the integrated hardware works fully without any stability issues including the Ethernet controller and 3D graphics.

I don't know why the other reviewer had stability problems. I have two 8gb Patriot Viper modules installed and had absolutely no problem getting them to run in XMP mode. I also didn't have any problems with any version of the BIOS. The version that ships with the board is F2, but version F5 is now available. As for his issues with RAID and installing Windows from a flash drive, I can't speak to those issues.

Great SLI-compatible mATX motherboard with an irritating flaw

I purchased this motherboard for a micro-ATX build in January of 2014. I specifically selected this board for its SLI compatibility at a reasonable price point and for the reputable brand name. I had no issues with the build at all, and the SLI works as advertised with two Nvidia Geforce GTX 760s. I was even able to get a modest overclock out of my CPU without any voltage increases!

However, I have one big problem with this board: Even after installing the latest UEFI BIOS, the on-board fan control is miserable. The two PWM-controlled fans on my CPU cooler ramp up appropriately with CPU load/temperature when I set them to use the 2.50x PWM slope setting, but the two non-PWM fans in my case don't ramp up at all. In fact, even though these two fans run at about 1100 RPM when at maximum voltage, they would only run at about 400 RPM at the default fan control settings. In order to move adequate fresh air towards my GPUs I was forced to set these fans to run at maximum speed all the time. I could install some software such as Gigabyte's own Easy Tune to control the fans, but I don't see why I should have to do that in order to control the fans, so I am deducting one star from my score. If you don't mind installing such software, then I wholeheartedly recommend this board for an mATX build, especially if SLI compatibility is important to you.
