I upgraded from the AMD A8 version as that one was running slow for my developing purposes. I run pretty heavy duty (resources intensive) code and all in Ubuntu 14.04 and must say it runs faster than my large desktop back home. Small, compact, beautiful design, amazing graphics output resolution, faster than my i7 3rd generation, and fully compatible with Ubuntu 14.04.

One small comment which Gigabyte refused to try to fix since they only do Windows support (not their fault): If running Ubuntu 14.04, make sure you're downgrade the kernel to the '-24' version. The updated one is the one after, '-30', which will crash upon boot (a kernel panick). To fix it, just boot up again, select "Advanced Ubuntu options" and go down to normal (not safe mode) on the '-24' kernel. Once inside, follow this stack to downgrade the kernel:

I'm a web developer and I purchased this for a dedicated Linux development machine. I received it today installed a 240gb Sandisk Ultra II and 16gb of ram. I'm writing this review on the machine. The hard drive and RAM where a snap to put in. Four screw on the base plus another 6 secure the drive and chassis. I was concerned reading some of the reviews if people using Linux. I can say it was smooth, fast and trouble free install. I didn't do any adjustments to the BIOS (although you may have to to run multiple syatems on it). I installed the ram, ssd drive, and ethernet cable and used a usb bootable install of Ubuntu 14.10. Installed lightning fast with no issues. Wireless works flawlessly (I'm using a Netgear NIGHTHAWK ac1900) and the machine is fast and silent. The shipping was fast and the machine was packed nicely.

I highly recommend this machine. Without seeing this computer in person it's hard to ascertain the actual size, this computer is tiny. it's about the length of a computer mouse but squared. It's heavy and well made has a high quality look to it in person.

I ordered the i7 4770R BRIX Pro, but I missed out on stock and there is no ETA. So opted for the i5 model that was instock and though I would give it a go. Its great. Fan noise is very quite unlike Anandtech's review saying it was very loud. But that was an i7. I find the system fan to be very well controlled. It ramps up with the load and you can hear it. It gets loud but only when pushing the GPU/CPU gaming and benchmarking etc. Speaking of which this Iris Pro runs 150Mhz less than the i7 model. However my bench marking tests in 3dmark11 and 3dmark13 showed its the a little more was what Anatech got in there review (GPU scores) [...] The only difference is the stronger CPU vs this models weaker one. 150 Mhz difference does not seem to make a difference!

If your not encoding 3K videos or video editing etc. Or needing 8 threads Vs 4 threads. The i5 is PERFECTLY fine. And I can play modern games like BF4 Med setting (No AA) and games like CS:GO at 1080p high settings very playable.
The form factor is great, I installed a Samsung 250GB Evo and it fly's. I will add another drive soon for storage.

For the form factor it is a very powerful computer, just don't forget you need RAM and a hdd/ssd. If you are striving for gaming performance, do not get the i7 model as it lowers clock speeds when overheating while this one does not overheat. The fan is horrible though. It is a little loud demon that sounds exactly like a blow dryer when running at max capacity on GTAV or something else really demanding. Besides that, it's quiet doing things like browsing the internet and editing in sony vegas or photoshop. I got so annoyed by the noise since I game on it a lot that I tore out the little black blower fan and put in a Noctua NF-A9x14. This did require me to pretty much take off the whole top of the case and place on a piece of plexiglass with holes in it to allow airflow through the top. Now I can play games like GTAV and MGSV. Note that this is no easy modification whatsoever and also required me to saw off two extruded screw holes on the heatsink to fit in everything, which obviously voids your warranty. In conclusion, if you want something for casual use like internet browsing and editing software, you'll be fine. For light to heavy gaming you do not want this unless you are willing to risk bricking the Brix to shut it up. Also the iris graphics are really extraordinary.

When looking for a dedicated computer to go with my new 4K tv, I had some strict requirements. I wanted something small enough that I could VESA mount it to the TV or at least place it on the TV stand. Lugging my 50 pound ATX desktop around was not practical. However, as a professional routinely using very CPU intensive programs for bioinformatics research, and as someone who enjoys some light gaming, I also wanted something with a lot of power. Simply stated, this device blows every other NUC and Mac Mini out of the water, as it has a Desktop rather than laptop (or Atom) CPU. Even the new Broadwell i7 NUC devices cannot come close as they only have 2 rather than 4 cores. The Iris Pro works great even at 4K, although note that a mini-displayport cable is needed for 4K@60hz. The tradeoff for this kind of power is that a large heatsink is necessary to dissipate the heat, which means that this is not a silent device, and it needs to have reasonably adequate airflow. However, I can only really hear it when it is being taxed very hard, and it is silent during routine tasks. Temps always stay below 75C, which is more than fine for a modern CPU. The i7 version, while technically somewhat faster, likely is either very loud or throttles and is much more expensive, so even from a power user standpoint I would recommend this version. Easy to set up with Windows 8, but you NEED 1.35V RAM for it to operate and should manually overclock it in the bios. SSD is highly recommended for a system of this caliber and a cheap USB WiFi adapter will give you better range. NUCs like this are actually cheaper than building yourself and if you look up the benchmarks you'll realize this is as fast as you can get for this form factor, not far off from my 4790K! Edit: for best performance and cooling, go into bios and enable turbo mode and ram overclocking at the appropriate spec. Then download Intel XTU and undervolt the processor ~70mV and the graphics ~100mV. Much cooler and faster.
