Fire hazard - not designed to handle 100% load 24/7

Fire hazard - not designed to handle 100% load 24/7
I bought two of these Gigabyte 7950s to run in a Bitcoin/Litecoin mining rig because the reviews all showed it came out-of-the-box with a 1GHz stock clock, so I wouldn't have to mess with things to get decent performance.I was running both cards in an open-air (frame) case because they get very hot under 100% load. Temps were never more than 78C on either card in this configuration. One day, I came home from work and the computer was powered off. I checked things out only to notice that one of the 7950s had a nice black, burned area on the backside of the PCB where something had fried. I got on Amazon to do an RMA and was fortunate that I still had 12 minutes left in the return period, so back it went.I restarted the computer with the remaining single 7950 and it has been running for a few weeks just fine. This last Tuesday, I just happened to be watching TV, which is in the same room as the computer, and I saw a bright flash out of the corner of my eye. I saw the LEDs power off, then the computer tried to power back on, and another flash/visible flame lept out of the 7950, and everything powered-down as I got that pungent stench of burning electronic components filling my house.I happened to be lucky to notice this and I yanked the cord from the wall before anything got worse. Fortunately, I have a good power supply (Corsair GS700) that has over-current protection and drops into safe-mode when this kind of thing happens, or else who knows if I would have come home to nice little fire that day when the first card fried while I was at work.I'll be RMAing this second 7950 because I can no longer return it to Amazon. However, after having TWO of these fail in EXACTLY the same way, I can say that I have pretty much zero faith that I'll run the replacement in my computer and will probably just ebay it or try to sell it to someone else. Worrying about fires is not worth it.I've uploaded photos showing the burned PCB if you'd like to see. These Gigabyte cards might be fine for gaming where you're just playing a light/medium load for a couple hours, but if you're looking to do hardcore GPU computing (Bitcoin, Litecoin, hashcracking, etc.) I'd strongly advise that you look elsewhere.

1st This is a very large card. I upgraded from an HD 6870 and it is about an inch plus longer. Make sure you have the room.
It comes OC at 1000MHz right out of the box. You can easily overclock it more. 1250MHz memory clock.
It idles at 41'C and max at 63'C under full load.
It runs BF3, Metro 2033, The Witcher 2, and Crysis 2 all at Ultra levels smoothly without OC at 1080p.
It's very quiet. Can't hear it through the case (Lanboy Air).
Easy install with Catalyst 13.1 Drivers from the AMD website.
Dual screen still looks good.
It is blue and black. I like the look since it goes with my case colors, but might be something to think about for others.
I would highly recommend this card due to the ability to OC it to HD 7970 levels safely and for about $100 less. It will last for years to come.
I spent way too much time researching between the HD 7870/7950/7970 and GTX 660 ti/ 670 and found this to be the best balance between price, OC ability, and base speed.
Out of the 7950 I was deciding between this (Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7950) and the Sapphire Vapor Cool HD 7950. I was using an Sapphire Vapor Cool HD 6870 and loved it.
I chose this card due to the excellent reviews from lots of sights who put these cards to MAX OC and recorded their performance with different games and resolution settings and then compared it to the out of the box settings. There definitely plenty of room to OC from the base clock speeds.
I can't wait for Crysis 3 and the new generation of games to come out.
Fast free shipping from Amazon was very nice. 3 Days faster than expected.
Update 2/2/13
It runs Crysis 3 Beta smoothly at High Levels. Very High seems to be just a smidge too much with out overclocking. We'll see how the finished product turns out and if OC makes it better.
Update 2/20/13
It runs Crysis 3 Single Player on Very High Levels with very few slow downs. It looks AMAZING. Pitty the game is really not that fun. Still running great.
It's OC and stable at 1100Mhz GPU and 5.5Mhz Memory Clock. Everything still runs great. Hopefully my CPU (i7 920) will hold up. Crysis 3 put it up to 80%, when nothing before could top 65% with a lot going on.

Pros: This card is a great performer. Sadly GIGABYTE has been selling low ASIC, voltage locked, boost only editions recently. These are good enough to hit stock BIOS clocks, but require higher voltage.

[+] Nice Stock Performance
- The newer revisions come with the FZ1 boost bios @ 1000Mhz Core / 1250Mhz Memory. That should be enough for all games @ 1080p

[+] Quiet & Cool
- The quietest 7950 on the market
- Can't beat the temps without going water
- VRM's get a little toasty (90c BF3) with Boost BIOS, but nothing bad

Cons: Don't trust the review's of this card on the big tech websites. Gigabyte just cherry-picks the best ASIC % they have, and sends it to them. Most people can not even push 1100Mhz at stock voltage.

[+] Poor Overclocking Compare to Other Brands
- On FZ1 BIOS it is locked at 1.25v, my 66% ASIC can only go to 1075 core stable.
- Good luck with the die lottery with gigabyte.

[+] Voltage Locked
- The boost BIOS throws your volts to 1.25v, even with AB forcing constant
- Only BIOS you can downgrade to is the other boost bios F3, which has a higher (1600mV) voltage on memory for better memory clocks.

[+] vDroop is quite bad
- When overclocking, 1.25v is really 1.16 under load.

It was a great price for a new dealer from Amazon. It was slow coming and when I opened it it it was smashed, I wrote to the place about it and they replied? It was listed as it is when you bought it on Aug.16th. I checked the site and the email? It said it was new and not used. The next time I see that it a new company? I'll wait and check there revues before buying anything from them.
I asked to send it back with fall money back. I worked with Amazon and sent it back. Its Sep. 7th 2013 and not received my money back yet on this.

Installing it was a bit of an ordeal; in addition to the card, I also had to get a new power supply to support it (this is very important. Word to prospective buyers, check your power supply to make sure it's 550W or more.) After the hassle, though, the improvements were immediately apparent - games that regularly ran around 30-40 fps instantly shot up to 60.

That was for the first few days. Then when I noticed slight artifacting problems with the card in some games, I attempted to reinstall drivers. That's when everything went downhill, as various horrible graphical glitches began appearing all across my screen. Starting up would yield any number of amazing and unique crashes, which would turn my screen yellow, cover parts of it in multicolor snow, cause my graphics drivers to 'stop responding' and 'recover', and even a few BSOD's - Might I add, the first BSOD's I've had the honor to experience on Windows 7.

So while the card is powerful, it's also unbelievably delicate. For whatever reason, running the computer at a tech shop seemed to go along fine, but any attempts to run at home went horribly awry. The fragility of the card is immediately apparent when I compare how my old card (ATI Radeon 4850) and this react when I open the case with the 4850 in it, it just keeps chugging along as normal. Doing the same with the 7950 instantly covered my screen in blue vertical stripes.

I cannot recommend this, honestly. Get a more robust version of the 7950 than this.
