Hilarious line drawings dramatize principles of grammar (hairy monkeys, aardvarks with buck teeth, Milk-Duds-eating squirrels, straggly three-headed cats, and more). Loony bin characters meander through the pages (Aunt Zippy with her frizzy hair; sweet little Domenica who raises earthworms; Matilda in her colorful, eye-catching shower cap that hide her trussed-up tresses; and others too numerous to mention).
Cathy Campbell uses funny-sounding words to add to the humor: flimflammer, gazillion, varmints, dreadlocks, pizzazz, hypnosis, zucchini, and pachyderms. She includes lots of buffoonery that teens will love (hairy armpits, underwear, squirming tapeworms being digested in the intestines, taco salad caught in braces, parrots gagging on feather balls, and on and on, almost ad infinitum. Invented names, invented words, and invented situations stand out on each page.

I absolutely adore this book! So many grammar books claim to be humorous and engaging for students but don't live up to my expectations. This book is quite the opposite. I used the mad lib exercise to teach nouns within the first two weeks of school, and I had students bringing home that activity to share with their whole family. A couple parents told me that their children had never been so excited about grammar before. Every teacher should have a copy of this book. The only downside is that this is a supplementary text that probably won't replace your year-long grammar curriculum. My only criticism is I wish this was longer!

this book is cute. I thought it was helpful but I also think there is a lot of jargon the author uses...maybe if the definitions could be simplified more and the writing more so less of a story...I felt I had to search for the answer I was looking for as opposed to just being openly visible.
Nonetheless, it is a cute book with pretty illustrations. Lots of examples and nice to read. This book would be optimal if I just wanted to read about parts of speech as opposed to trying to do homework with it.

Let's be honest, sixth graders will always moan when a teacher says, "It's time for grammar." But now they're laughing when they see the examples, and they're motivated to get to the next question. The examples are challenging enough that the students need to think. Often they need to refer back to the rules pages to make sure they're doing it right -- which I prefer over an easy repetitive worksheet. This is my first stop for grammar.

I bought one of these at a Barry Lane gathering for the same $$. I loved it! As I a teacher I found it very useful. I loaned it to a friend who retired in the middle of the year. She left it in a pile of things on her desk. The new teacher found it and started using it, not knowing it was really mine. In order to keep peace I just bought another one on AMAZON assuming it would be the same. WRONG! NO CD = No printable worksheets, power points or lessons like the CD version. Why would they even offer a book without those options? The exercises are printed with half the lesson on one page and continued on the next page. It is not a problem until you go to make copies for students. This must have been published by some company who had NO KNOWLEDGE of TEACHING. This version is pointless and a waste of money. BUY THE ONE WITH THE CD included or you will be sorry, just like me.

We do classical conversations, and it strangely follows most of the essentials curriculum so it's a nice additional resource that's way less dry and boring than most grammar books. The pictures and practice sentences are really funny and my class really enjoys them when I use them.
