I have little to add to the generally enthusiastic reviews already contributed here. If one wants a recording of Iolanthe, this one would be hard to beat. It captures the D'Oyly Carte forces at a splendid period--their last unfortunately. A couple of things:
The CD digital re-mastering of the original analog version removes a bit of the "bloom" from the overall sound of the recording. Decca's re-masterings are usually pretty fine, certainly better than the botched ones done by EMI of many of their recordings. Anyone should be completely happy to own this Iolanthe--except those of us who own good pressings of the original Decca (or London) LPs.
Another thing. The splendid D'Oyly Carte contralto Ann Drummond-Grant died in 1959, just one year before this recording was made. She was the superb company contralto (although she had started out years before as a soprano). Her recordings of Lady Blanche (1955), Katisha and Ruth (both in 1957) might be described as definitive. The Fairy Queen in Iolanthe was considered to be one of her finest roles. Gillian Knight, who appears as the Fairy Queen in this recording of Iolanthe was a very fine singer and actress (I saw a number of her performances with the D'Oyly Carte from 1960 on), but she lacked the gravitas, and of course the experience, of Drummond-Grant.

Iolanthe was the first Gilbert & Sullivan purchase I'd ever made. I did so for my wife, not for myself. Who knew!? Yes, Gilbert & Sullivan music does indeed "sound like Gilbert & Sullivan" music; I have difficulty listening to this music without visualizing any of a number of Monty Python skits. But I had no idea that Gilbert's lyrics were so witty, nor that they were written as social commentary. Hilarious stuff. I am especially pleased that this recording includes the spoken dialogue between the songs. This really brings the music to life for me.

Unlike many of the G&S CD's--this one includes the 'book' or spoken lines. A fine recording with first-class talent (Donald Adams, Gillian Knight).
Iolanthe is the story of a lad who is the result of the union between a fairy and a mortal. Inheriting the traits of his parents he is half fairy and half human---quite literally human from the waist down and fairy from the waist up. The internal civil war between his fairy brain and mortal extremities leads to endless merriment.

This Doyly-Carte ""Iolanthe" is the definitively excellent one, in my view.

Iolanthe has one of Sullivan's best scores and one of Gilbert's most amusing (and politically perceptive) librettos. I had the good fortune to see a performance of it by the D'Oyly Carte company on their final USA tour, decades ago, shortly before they went out of existence. I have not seen the current DVDs of Iolanthe, but from all reports no fully satisfactory Iolanthe DVD is now on the market. The D'Oyly Carte CD, even though it lacks the visual element, is thus the best available Iolanthe. It includes the spoken words as well as the music, and the superb dramatic and vocal D'Oyly Carte traditions are well served. Sullivan's brilliant orchestrations are expertly performed and cleanly recorded. The vocal recording is a bit further away from modern technical standards--hence my choice of 4 stars rather than 5--but still good enough for the words to be clearly understood. Now, if the Austrailian Opera company would only dump their old flawed production of Iolanthe and give us a new Iolanthe DVD as good as their Patience or Pinafore . . .

Performed by THE premier G&S company, verrry British. One of my personal favorites and a must for all G&S fans.

Excellent rendition of a timeless classic. I do not know how to express my pleasure beyond measure. Yes. Yes. Three.

I wrongly thought the Iolanthe was a video version of the opera, not an audio one. (My fault.)
That is why I returned it, and cancelled the rest of my order.

Gilbert & Sullivan: Iolanthe.

This is one of the series of Decca recordings of the G&S comic operas made in the early 60s featuring the D`Oyly Carte Company of the period – the great John Reed in the comic roles.
These are the recordings I grew up with so I have a natural bias towards them, but they are also the only available sets with the dialogue that makes them even more valuable.
The recording is very good for the time and the singers - though not top operatic voices – have a proper understanding of the unique genre that is G&S and play their roles as representative of that now sadly lost tradition.
A good set to have if one is a true fan of these subversive and amusing works.
There is no libretto, but a synopsis is included in the booklet.
The CD playing times are 72.53 minutes and 46.25 minutes.

A great recording

I really enjoyed listening to this recording! The singing is really beautiful. I didn't like G & S and I had really underestimated how cleaver and funny their work is. The melodies are terrific. The acting during the dialogue sounds very dated when you compare it to the wonderful all male version of Iolanthe which I saw in London in December, 2010. I was pleased to get such a good (full) recording of the work.

G & S Iolanthe
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 16, 2014
I am a G & S fan and have performed in the choruses of some of their operettas with the Wellington Gilbert & Sullivan & Light Opera Society here in Wellington, NZ. The D'Oyly Carte Company, being, of course the descendant of the original company set up by Richard D'Oyly Carte are to me the best and the most preferable.

Good vintage recording with some of the very best D'Oyly Carte soloists such as Gillian Knight and Thomas Round. John Reid's Lord Chancellor is very stilted, especially in dialogue, but "Iolanthe" never had the makeover back then that, say, "The Gondoliers" did.

A classic recording and to the high standard you can expect from the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. Much enjoyed by myself and my husband to familiarize ourselves with a music ahead of performing locally in a production of Iolanthe.
