The Guilded Cuff by Lauren Smith is the first installment in the Surrender Series. This book will have you hooked page by page with the mystery, erotic build up, and anticipation. I loved Sophia and Emery's journey in this amazing book!! A new favorite author of mine!!

Sophie is an investigative journalist that specializes in kidnappings. If she can help save someone, it soothes herself from her traumatic past. Not cure. She will never forget or ever really stop blaming herself. She witnessed her best friend get kidnapped right in front of her. When she reads about the Lockwood boys' kidnapping of Emery and Fenn Lockwood, she is determined to help solve the case because she is sure that he is still in danger. It will be the story of a lifetime. No one has found Fenn but Emery has become a recluse for 25 years and the only way to get to him is to go to a club called The Guilded Cuff, a place he is known to frequent. After thanking her lucky stars on finding him there, he strikes a bargain with her, she give herself over to him completely and in return, she will get her story. As they get to know each other, she starts to develop feelings for him and starts to reevaluate how she has lived with her own guilt of not being able to protect her best friend just like he lives with his guilt for not being able to protect his brother. Series of events bring them closer until BAM!!! I cannot say anymore!!! Just know this was a very catching story. I was drawn into their world from beginning to end!!

Emery Lockwood has to live day to day without his twin and it feels like he's lost half of himself. The guilt is enough to carry. But when he meets Sophie, she intrigues him with her innocence. The initial chemistry is astounding as well.

Sophie Ryder is an investigative journalist, helping to solve cold cases involving the missing. She knows how it feels to lose someone dear because of the evil souls in this world. She also knows the guilt that survivors are left with. Her innocence of the world was lost when she was young and it has kept her removed from life, she’s been more of an observer than a participant, she doesn’t know how to be otherwise. But there is something in the eyes of a child in an old newspaper clipping and a gut feeling that it’s not over for him that has her seeking out the lone survivor of a twin kidnapping and doing so won’t be easy for he’s a recluse only rarely leaving his home to spend time at a BDSM club.

Emery Lockwood and his twin were kidnapped when he was young. He alone survived and he hasn’t shared all the details of what happened to him for reasons that he keeps to himself, the memories still haunt him. He surrounds himself with security and a personal guard and runs his family business from his estate. He exists but does not really live. Occasionally he visits a BDSM club and one night there he finds himself intrigued by a new submissive. When he finds out that she’s a reporter he knows that he should walk away but there is something about her that draws him so he strikes a deal with her, his story for her submission and perhaps she even can solve the case.

I loved this! This story had a great combination of mystery, suspense, romance and light BDSM. The characters were great and not just the main ones. The hero and heroine had emotional depth, both their stories were heartbreaking. I found myself invested in them, their attraction was strong and more than the lust that drew them to each other.

'The Gilded Cuff' drew me in immediately, and I felt completely drawn to the pages until the very end. The story starts with Sophie, our investigative journalist, seeking out Emery, our reclusive millionaire, in a very private BDSM club. Both Sophie and Emery have painful past childhoods that have deeply affected their adulthoods. And Emery's past in particular leads Sophie on a quest to meet him, protect him, and save him. That is, if this recluse will let her in.

I loved getting to know Emery and Sophie. I found their characters completely compelling, riddled with honest emotions. They were both compassionate and genuine. Despite Emery's reclusiveness, he has the fierce loyalty of a small group, and that speaks volumes of his character, that although he has walls, literally and figuratively, in place, he still is an incredibly thoughtful, kindhearted man, even in his deep loneliness. Sophie also suffers from loneliness, yet the trauma she faced as a child has turned her into a warrior for those who need protection. Her personal life has suffered, but her compassion for those suffering around her has only grown.

So when these two meet and are able to see the truth behind each others' walls, it's no wonder that their chemistry, intimacy, tenderness, and understanding of one another drew them together, and gave them a chance at freedom from their pasts, and from themselves.

Even though they were together such a short amount of time, I loved how beautifully these two worked together. I could feel the sparks between them coming off the pages. Their attraction was a clear neon sign. But I loved the progress in their physical relationship. To me it was unexpected, because of how the author chose to progress it, and I loved that.
