This is an outstanding first novel in a new series, and with it comes all the best feelings evoked by good writing: empathy, concern, drive, despair, and ecstasy. It's the beginning of the best of journeys in historical fiction. -- The Historical Novel Society
Another meticulously researched period drama with dashes of mystery and romance ... Page-turning and atmospheric. -- Kirkus Reviews
*Compelling ... This satisfying read, rich in interpersonal relationships of many kinds, is part romance, part mystery, and part serial-killer thriller. -- starred review, Booklist
Spellbinding... Captivating... The 752 pages were not enough. ...But this novel is more than its setting: it also is an enthralling love story, a heartwarming celebration of human kindness, and a wonderfully convoluted world of characters whose destinies are left tantalizingly suspended. --The Seattle Times

in one place as her great aunt. Since Hannah was not only Birdie's half sister but also Aunt Quinilan half sister, that makes Hannah, Anna's Aunt.
As for Sophie's parents, it was never clear who her parents were but since her last name was also Savard, I am assuming that she was Hannah's granddaughter as Hannah's husband was a Savard and half white, part Indian and part negro and Hannah was half Indian. The only other Savard males were Henry who married Birdie and his dad and Uncle.
I want to preface this review for those of my friends who don't care for anything sexual in a book. That being said, I felt that what does occur in this story is appropriate and tasteful, in light of the characters.
Donati has woven a beautiful story about 1880's New York City, with all the grittiness and beauty you could imagine. Her gift for description is beyond compare. I can't say enough about her ability to craft the story and weave you into the world she has created. This book resonates with life and combines history, romance, mystery, suspense and fact into a masterpiece.
Can you tell I loved this book???
A lovely romance between Anna and Italian American detective Jack Mezzanotte as well as visits from other Bonner/Savard relatives lightens the tale.
Part romance, part mystery and an historically accurate look at a New York City only seen today in photographs, there's someone for everyone.
The depth of the research and the number of well done story lines was unexpected and joyfully received: immigration, racism, orphans, birth control and the lack there of, politics, women doctors and women's health, New York City, the poor and the wealthy...it's all here.
The characters are deep, complex and believable and isn't it fascinating that the argument for a woman to have control of her reproductive rights is still being fought almost a hundred years later.
History is represented authentically and without apology, it is what it was.
