The minidisc that comes with the cable wouldn't go in my laptop (Vista [Enterprise32-bit]), so I copied its contents onto a USB drive and then pointed the installer there (to the whole directory -- don't look for a certain file). It found the driver and it works with the GPS and the DNR Garmin program.
** On both computers I had to change the port for the GPS within the DNRGarmin program before it would recognize the GPS unit. The USB choice didn't work on either, so I assume it sets up a virtual Comm port (Port 2 on my desktop and Port 8 on my laptop), but I don't know much about computers.
1) download the Win 7 drivers from Gilsson <http://www.gilsson.com/usb_drivers_download.htm>
2) Install drivers
3) connect Garmin, and cables to usb port and turn on Garmin
4) auto discover should find the Garmin device (mine mapped the USB port to COM 9)
5) Using GPS software, I used EasyGPS <http://www.easygps.com/download.asp>
6) Retrieve GPS information, set GPS device to step 4 COM port setting
If you have a slot-loading (as opposed to a tray that comes out) CD/DVD drive, forget about installing the drivers from the 3 inch disk that comes with this. If you manage to find the drivers online, they don't do the trick on the newer OSX.
I ended hooking up the Garmin eTrex Legend GPS to the serial port of a very old PC to update the device (negating the need for this cable altogether). Hardware is usually only as good as the driver that enables it. Still running Windows XP on a PC? Works fine.
Mac user (with this GPS)? Forget it.
