About the Author

FRANK KUSY is an aspiring Buddhist and incorrigible cat lover. He wrote his first cat book when he was eight. It was called 'Jessie the Cat' and even his mum liked it. There followed 'Toad's Dilemma' (a sequel to Frank's all time fave kid's book, 'The Wind in the Willows') and a whole host of similarly derivative anthropomorphic master-pieces. Only after a short affair with journalism in his 20's did he write anything with a human being in it (the Financial Times insisted upon it), and only after he went to India, aged 30, did he stop writing about cats (he only saw one in India). Frank's first published book (1986) was a travelogue on India – now re-released on Amazon as Kevin and I in India. There followed a slew of Asian travel guides – India, Thailand, Burma, Indonesia etc – but none of them paid very much and the last one gave him a ten-year writing block: he simply couldn't decide which Delhi hotel had the best bath-room, the Taj Intercontinental or the Oberoi. Frank returned to writing after breaking his leg in 2005 – his wife nagged him into it. And the first thing they penned together was...another cat book. Thus came into being 'Ginger the Gangster Cat', the story of one fat cat's devotion to Spanish cuisine. For anyone interested, Sparky – their 3-year old perennial kitten and Ginger's shy and nervous sidekick – is real. He really is the cutest cat in the universe. Ginger himself is a composite of every stray tom-cat Frank has had in the past, absolute terrors all of them!

Okay, I admit to being a big fan of cats...they're independent thinkers and I'm servant to a few of them...so I know that Mr. Kusy really understands how cats think, behave and misbehave. And that's fine by this reader. But there's more here than recording anthropomorphic cats. This hugely entertaining story and its companion piece Ginger the Buddha Cat are masterpieces of story-telling in the tradition of Aesop, Kipling, and other great writers who knew you can put great humor and occasional wisdom into the mouths of so-called less-intelligent beings. What I admire about the writer, beyond his obvious literary talents and ability to tell a great tale, is his knack at combining everything from interesting travel (here: Barcelona), to shrewd observation of people as well as animals, to superb characterization (I can never forget some of the strange but fascinating people who populate his works...do check out Kevin and I in India, and Rupee Millionaires, and you'll feel like you've spent years traveling the length and breadth of India!). And these little feline-based novellas will do the same for you: great people with all their foibles, adorable and less-adorable cats (my eye is on you, Ginger!), and sweet, wandering tales of overseas adventure and karma that keep you wanting what will come next from the fertile mind of Frank Kusy.

First of all, let me declare a bias. I love so-called 'heavy' fiction, like Finnegans Wake and Gravity's Rainbow. But, me duckies, I love entertaining fiction more and Ginger the Gangster Cat is entertainment with a capital 'E.' Therein lies its beauty.

Ginger and Sparky, Sparky and Ginger, are as fine a pair of feline adventurers as you'll ever find. And the oomans in the story are just as entertaining. Take Sergei the plumber: `My name Sergei and I am top-notch hoity-toity good egg. You no take Ginger cat. He is friend of mine. If you try to take, your ducks will come home to sit on the grill!'

I see an animated film, I do, a blockbuster. It won't be heavy but it'll be damn soul-satisfying.

This is a great read. Excellent dialogue, intriguing story, told with just the right amount of mischievous irreverence. Joe Kovacs is a master storyteller and you won't be disappointed. Ginger and his beloved little friend, Sparky, are two of the most endearing cat characters I've ever come across - and I've been enjoying animal stories for over fifty years, so that's saying a lot. Although this posts as a story for children, I found it to be an exceptional book for any age. Buy it, read it, you'll love it!!!

Roll over Garfield there's a new orange fat cat that is gunning for your turf.

I read the original version of this book a while ago to my son when he was eight. It was on Authonomy way back then, and was my son's steadfast favourite from that site. So, I was extremely happy to see it get published, because it's a fantastic read. It follows the adventures of Ginger and his small mate Sparky, with great British humour, the fantastic dialogue adding to this.

In relation to ranking the book, my son wanted to give Ginger 110%. I told him that percentages only go up to 100, but he didn't care, and reckons that Ginger "should break the rule." My little maths' genius :)

Oh, yeah, I forgot to say: Arwyn would be glued to that TV if, no when, Ginger becomes a cartoon. Garfield who? Ginger stole his stripes!

An entertaining read for both parents and children.

I suspect that most of us who bought this book must have two things in common: kids or grandkids and, of course a love of cats with attitudes.

Yes, I have grandkids, but I wasn't a cat lover and I still deny that I'm a cat lover. At least I'll deny it to my friends. We live just outside a small town and have wheat fields on two sides of our property and grass fields on the other two sides. Believe me when I say we need cats. They keep disappearing whenever a coyote or raccoon come around. But we need plenty of cats to keep the mouse and gopher populations down. The upshot, we need to keep adding cats and we've had some real personalities. Needless to say, we've had more than one gangsta tom!

Now, about this book. It's about a Garfield on steroids with a lot more energy and a little more attitude. He travels around the countryside and forces his personality on all who behold him. This is a great book for the kiddos and this 68 year-old curmudgeon enjoyed the entertainment.

Ginger the Gangster Cat is such a fun and fast read! I must say I haven't had a good laugh for a while, and Joe Kovacs' Ginger made me laugh out loud on numerous occasions as I was reading about Ginger and his friend Sparky's adventures. If you are a cat lover, this book is for you! Sparkling humour, great cat dialogue, and nasty oomans is only part of the fun there is in this book! I'm definitely not going to spoil all the fun for those who haven't yet got to it, by telling the rest. Just buy/download and read this book! It won't leave you disappointed.

Well done, Mr. Kovacs! A five-out-of-five-stars book!
Prrrrrrrp!
