Editorial Reviews

Review

"Theriault makes a strong argument that the primary source of ideological polarization in today's Senate stems from the 'Gingrich Senators,' the Republican senators who previously served in the US House, and were elected to the House after 1978, when Newt Gingrich was first elected... Party polarization in Congress is undoubtedly one of the most pressing policy-making challenges in the US, making this analysis particularly timely and relevant. Theriault's research offers both a compelling, readable explanation of polarization and a foundation for further research... Highly recommended." --CHOICE

"In The Gingrich Senators, Sean M. Theriault makes the initially stunning, but ultimately convincing, case that polarization and partisanship in the Senate has its roots in the House." --Congress & the Presidency

"The patterns that Theriault uncovers are intriguing....This is a must-read for congressional scholars, and it demonstrates a fascinating pattern of behavior that has important consequences for the character of the modern Senate." --Gerald C. Wright, Indiana University, Political Science Quarterly

I grew tired of the many graphs, but they were necessary to support the opinions of the author. This book furnishes a good reference for future discussions on the direction our government is taking in the 21st century. I gave it 5 stars because I feel it is valuable for future research - not because I "love it" (as the 5 star rating notes). I feel the book will play a part in the literature that is written in the later 21st century and perhaps the 22nd century.

I very much enjoyed reading this! I have had Theriault at the University of Texas and it was one of my favorite courses and one of my favorite Profs. Overall this book was very well thought out and had graphics when needed to enhance the arguments. This was an era in Congress that is particularly interesting and I used this book as an insight into the inner-workings of an institution that I thought I knew. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in Congress and the continuing power of Gingrich.

I bought this book for a graduate course I was enrolled in. It's good, but I wouldn't read it on my own.
