About the Author

Bradford Morrow (b. 1951) is an award-winning novelist, short story writer, editor, and author of children’s books. He grew up in Colorado and traveled extensively before settling in New York and launching the renowned literary journal Conjunctions. His novel The Almanac Branch was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, and for Trinity Fields, Morrow was the recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Academy Award in Literature. He has garnered numerous other accolades for his fiction, including O. Henry and Pushcart prizes, as well as a Guggenheim Fellowship. Morrow is a professor of literature and Bard Center Fellow at Bard College.

"Imagine a scene of rural serenity, a night scene." So begins the first chapter of Bradford Morrow's latest novel, Giovanni's Gift. However pastoral this start may seem, in a few short paragraphs, Morrow succeeds in shattering the peace as he sets up the central mystery of the book: an unknown trespasser conducts a campaign of terror against the inhabitants of a lonely farm somewhere in "the western mountains." Loud music blares in the middle of the night, phone lines are cut, an effigy hangs from an ash tree, a door is stolen--over the course of several months these and other random acts of harassment begin to wear on Henry and Edmé Fulton. Eventually, Edmé's nephew, Grant, arrives from Rome to help unravel the truth behind these increasingly disturbing events. In the memorable Trinity Fields, Morrow evoked wild Western landscapes magnificently, in all their glorious weathers and shifting lights. He does so again in this tale of an elderly architect and his wife, living quietly in a remote mountain valley, whose lives are suddenly and violently disrupted by horrendous noises breaking the silent nights. Enter their nephew, narrator Grant, a young drifter who seems permanently in romantic heat, and who has just separated, in Rome, from his second wife. An anxious call brings him back to Ash Creek, the only steady home he has ever known, and he begins to try to seek out the source of the malevolent nocturnal disturbances. He also falls for beautiful Helen, whose father, Giovanni Trentas, a friend of Uncle Henry and Aunt Edme, met a violent end in the valley some years before. It soon becomes apparent that a beautiful cigar box in which Giovanni kept souvenirs and mysterious scraps of diary (and which gives this book its gorgeous cover) hides dark secrets about his death, a long-buried romance and Helen's real parentage. The reader is on to most of this before Grant apparently is, and the circuitous way in which he comes to his discoveries, coupled with his oddly shifty nature, considerably slackens what should have been a much tenser narrative. Somehow, the human drama never lives up to the epic quality of Morrow's prose, and the book, for all its beauties and some passages of fine romantic ardor, never quite comes to life. Author tour.

Grant, a rootless young expatriate, returns to his childhood home in the Rockies in response to his aunt and uncle's plea for help. A night intruder has shattered their serenity by blasting them with music late at night and setting up grotesque scenes hinting at violence toward the uncle. The attacks, moreover, seem to be escalating. Grant immediately falls for Helen, daughter of the ranch's late caretaker, Giovanni, who was found dead and mutilated several years before. When his aunt gives him a box of trinkets and cryptic messages from Giovanni, Grant immerses himself in solving the box's riddle, which takes him deep into his family's secret past. Author Morrow aims more toward Gothic romance than mystery per se, sacrificing suspense for character exploitation and lyrical nature description, which the great Frank Muller reads with hushed breathlessness. The outcome will surprise few, but Morrow has some original ideas and a talent for stylish prose. The packaging is beautiful; recommended.?John Hiett, Iowa City P.L.

Bradford Morrow has lived for the past thirty years in New York City and rural upstate New York, though he grew up in Colorado and lived and worked in a variety of places in between. While in his mid-teens, he traveled through rural Honduras as a member of the Amigos de las Americas program, serving as a medical volunteer in the summer of 1967. The following year he was awarded an American Field Service scholarship to finish his last year of high school as a foreign exchange student at a Liceo Scientifico in Cuneo, Italy. In 1973, he took time off from studying at the University of Colorado to live in Paris for a year. After doing graduate work on a Danforth Fellowship at Yale University, he moved to Santa Barbara, California, to work as a rare book dealer. In 1981 he relocated to New York City to the literary journal Conjunctions, which he founded with the poet Kenneth Rexroth, and to write novels. He and his two cats divide their time between NYC and upstate New York.

Just couldn't stay awake

Set in a richly described but unnamed Western town, the lead character, Grant, comes home to visit his aunt and uncle who live there. He is in his early thirties, divorcing his wife, and looking for a place he can call home. His aunt and uncle have been receiving mysterious night visits by someone setting out to intimidate them, and the book's intention is to unravel this mystery.
The title, Giovanni's Gift, refers to a cigar box full of mementos that Giovanni, a friend of the uncle, leaves behind when he dies. The reader immediately suspects there was a murder.
The box is an allegory to Pandora's box and as Grant discovers the meaning of each item in the box, the story becomes more complex, especially since Grant falls in love with Giovanni's daughter.
The preservation of the land is another subplot and the author constantly veers off the story with poetic metaphorical language to make this point over and over again. I do have to applaud the author though for his skill with words and for having whatever it took to be recognized in the publishing world. I think he says a few important things about the environment. But I just couldn't stay awake.

Don't read this book!

I hate to give a book a bad review, but after noting the high praise other reviewers have given this book, I have to reply. I bought the book solely because I read the cover story article in New York magazine on the making of this book and Mr. Morrow's six figure advance for it ("How to Make a Bestseller" 2/10/97.) Needless to say, I was very disappointed. I think I read a little over the first one hundred pages before I had to put the book down. The story was almost melodramatic, and at times the writing so veered towards the sentimental, that I couldn't believe this was coming from the same man who edits Conjunctions, which is primarily known for its experimental use of language. Trust the NY Times Review of Books on this one. Maybe some of Mr. Morrow's other books are better, but I would think twice before picking up a copy of this book. And the fact that this book earned a six-figure advance, while I certainly think 99% of writers of literary fiction are underpaid and am all for sizeable advancements, the amount spent on this book and marketing it can only take away money that could otherwise be spent on more deserving books.

Brilliant! Inspired! (At least to my tiny 13 year old mind.)

I loved Mr. Morrow's writing style and prose. Some people say it was boring, but I thought it was just enough to pull you into the book. I found it very suspenseful towards the end, and was somewhat surprised by the ending. I enjoyed the book immensely.
