Purchase options and add-ons

The most comprehensive book on giraffes to appear in the last fifty years, this volume presents a magnificent portrait of a group of animals who, in spite of their legendary elegance and astonishing gentleness, may not entirely survive this century.

Dale Peterson’s text provides a natural and cultural history of the world’s tallest and second-biggest land animals, describing in detail their biology and behavior. He offers a new perspective on the giraffes’ place in our world, and argues for the stronger protection of these imposing yet endangered creatures and their elusive forest relatives, the okapis.

Some 120 stunning photographs by award-winning wildlife photographer Karl Ammann capture the grace and elegance of
Giraffa camelopardalis. Both beautiful and informative, the images document giraffes’ complex interactions with each other and their environment.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Conservationists estimate that there are fewer than 75,000 giraffes remaining in the world, scattered about in small pockets of declining habitat across Africa. In this stunning collection of Ammann's photographs, Peterson (Jane Goodall) offers an engaging natural history of giraffes, as well as a look at their behavior and beauty. The Greek historian Agatharchides referred to the giraffe as the animal that "Greeks call camelopardalis... it has the varied coat of a leopard, the shape of a camel... its neck is long enough for it to browse in the tops of trees." Drawing on scientific studies, Peterson notes the manifold advantages of being tall and long-necked, which increases the animals' ability to avoid predators, thermoregulate, forage for food, and find suitable mates. Giraffes exhibit traits that reveal the workings of their own mental worlds, including the behaviors of sparring, vigilance, fear, and flight. Ammann's exquisite photos portray the giraffes' majesty and just how impoverished our world would be if they "march into a night of nonexistence." 111 color illus., 2 b&w photos.

Review

"In this stunning collection of Ammann's photographs, Peterson offers an engaging natural history of giraffes, as well as a look at their behavior and beauty. . . . Ammann's exquisite photos portray the giraffes' majesty and just how impoverished our world would be if they 'march into a night of nonexistence.'" ― Publishers Weekly Published On: 2013-08-19

"Giraffe Reflections is a stunning compendium of animal photography and entertaining history. . . . The real point of the book is Ammann's gorgeous photos of giraffes, both atmospheric shots and more prosaic ones of the animals going about their business. With Peterson's entertaining text as a filigree, the combination is an emotionally satisfying presentation." -- Bob Holmes ―
New Scientist Published On: 2013-09-07

"An elegant and comprehensive volume. In a series of lushly visual essays, the authors delve into the evolution of giraffes' strange anatomy and the intricacies of their behavior, as well as their possible futures alongside humans. Marvelously―and despite the book's encyclopedic presentation―giraffes become even more mysterious by the tome's end than they were at its beginning." -- Lee Billings ―
Scientific American Published On: 2013-09-01

"A magnificent book. . . . Throughout, the story of the giraffe is told as much with images as with text. Each chapter concludes with a series of Ammann's breathtaking photographs, which have been selected and sequenced to illustrate specific themes. This is engrossing natural history about one of nature's most intriguing animals. Highly recommended for all who enjoy learning about African wildlife." STARRED REVIEW -- Cynthia Lee Knight ―
Library Journal Published On: 2013-09-01

“'Giraffe Reflections' is a rare breed in that it excels both as a photography book and a work of natural history. Karl Ammann’s photographs are riveting, but so is Peterson’s text. Each enhances the other." -- Jan Gardner ―
Boston Globe Published On: 2013-09-07

"Informative and strangely mesmerizing." ―
Giraffe Reflections Published On: 2013-12-23

"This is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful books of the year." -- Alan Petrucelli ―
Examiner.com Published On: 2013-12-19

"Striking full-page photographs are highlights in this comprehensive text on the biology and behavior of giraffes." ―

Dale Peterson has written about anthropology, art, computers, conservation, evolution, literature, psychiatry, travel, and animals. He is also Jane Goodall's official biographer, and that biography, "Jane Goodall: The Woman Who Redefined Man," is among the best known of his twenty books.

Dale's latest work, "The Ghosts of Gombe," adds an entirely new chapter to the Goodall story, one that focuses on two pivotal years at her research site, 1968 and 1969, that were magically marked by a startling new perspective on the chimpanzees—and tragically ended by the shocking death of one young chimpanzee researcher.

I bought this book for my teenage granddaughter who is crazy about giraffes. She will probably not read it from cover to cover but she loved it. The pictures are wonderful and it's very interesting even if you just want to use it as reference. I hightly recommemd it to anyone who loves giraffes even if you're not an avid reader.

Bought this for a friend who is into Giraffes. She absolutely loved it. The pictures were fabulous and the information contained in the book was very interesting. She learned more and more about them. She talks about the book often. For anyone who is "really" into giraffes this is the go to book.

This book has a thoughtful and clever arrangement of pictures and text. It dwells on the history of the knowledge about giraffes for half of the book before finally getting to some anatomy, physiology, and behavior information. It is not comprehensive, as the book jacket states. Some of the photographs are quite beautiful, but some have obviously been chosen to illustrate the text and are of lesser quality. Overall, I enjoyed this book about my favorite mammal, the giraffe.

This is the most beautiful book and belongs on your coffee table for everyone to see...something you would keep forever. I bought it for a gift and she just couldn't say enough about it. Pictures are breathtaking better than National Geographic!! So informative...I had no idea there was so much to learn about these gentle giants. The price was unreal for the type of book that it is...well worth it! I'm sure the book on the Elephants is just as breathtaking. Anyone looking for a different gift for someone should really check this out or if you are an animal lover you can't go wrong! I think I will buy the Elephant one for myself. If you could give this book a 10 star I would!
