A Girl Corrupted by the Internet is the Summoned Hero?! Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 582 ratings

"My family name is Yugano. My given name is Yuuki. I have no redeeming qualities." So begins this light novel of a girl corrupted by the Internet, and then summoned to another world. She's jaded from having already read many stories like that - but will that prepare her for what awaits in this world? Of course not! But she's going to plunge ahead anyway, and not slow down for anything!

Eliezer Yudkowsky is the author of "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality" and "Rationality: From AI to Zombies". He is a decision theorist specializing in self-reference and reflection, a fact which unstoppably infects his writing no matter how frivolous.

Without giving away too much of the plot, let's just say that the author picks a couple of main characters, settings, and concepts that are familiar from popular culture, mythology, or literature. He then simplifies them all the way down to the most essential set of rules. And then proceeds to string these rules together in the most logically consistent, but absolutely ridiculous sequence of events.

The story at times gets a little sexually explicit. By definition not any worse than what would commonly be encountered on the internet, but that's not exactly saying much. The adult content is an integral part of the story though. So, a mature reader is unlikely to be bothered, and a lot more likely to laugh out loud considering the sheer ridiculousness of the plot -- a younger reader might not get the references and could be confused or disturbed.

Overall, the plots twists are highly entertaining and there are enough curve balls that I enjoyed reading each and every one of the short chapters. The downside to this style of writing is that it only works well, if the characters are static. Any amount of character development would break the illusion of a twisty, but logically inevitable plot development. Similarly, once the plot has run its course, it is difficult to continue the story without breaking the spell. And since so much depends on surprising turns in the plot, I am not sure I would read the story more than once nor enjoy it after reading spoilers.

Consequently, not only is the book rather short, it also ends quite abruptly. In a way, the sudden ending makes the story feel like a highly amusing first chapter of a longer work. This longer work, if it existed, would continue telling a story in the same universe, but not necessarily using the same over-the-top plot devices and flat characters. As is, I am a little torn between enjoying the hour of entertainment that I got form this purchase and feeling let down because it ended so suddenly. I would happily pay for a book that extended our view of this particular universe.

This is a surprisingly sweet, generous, *charitable* little book. Especially for being about a debased girl who willingly sells her soul to Satan. It's funny but it's also...kind. It left me feeling better about humanity.

Look, you'll know if you want to read it by browsing the sample chapters. If you read those and want to find out what happens next, you won't be disappointed and it's definitely worth the dollar.

This is kind of a strange concept for a story, because it's kind of about pornography while not actually containing any pornographic scenes. One of the key plot points is that the main character is a teenage girl who shamelessly consumed lots of online pornography. She is summoned to a fantasy world to save them from the "Dark Lord", and the magic system in the world revolves heavily around notions of sexual purity/impurity/desires.

You might think "okay, this sounds like an excuse for erotica" but no, there is no erotica. At all.

What you get instead is a lot of humor, and clever exploits of the way magic and prophecy work in the setting. Some attempts at exploits work, some fail, and the whole hangs together sensibly. There's a lot of "clever people coming up with clever solutions" in it, which I always enjoy. There's also a certain genre-savviness to it; the protagonist knows the kind of story she's in, and also that it's not technically a story so may not follow the conventions she's expecting it to.

The biggest weakness is that the characters could've been more engaging. The protagonist is interesting but the only person one really gets to know as a distinct personality. Still, the premise was cute and the clever stuff is delivered well.

The story takes a little bit of getting into and can be juvenile and cheesy at parts. However, it is also funny and makes you think once you do immerse yourself.

Yuuki a perverted girl when she was... ahem, relieving herself, is summoned to another world. where she is the hero and is destined to win against the wicked emperor by 100%. Unfortunately, she's not particularly interested in saving the world. Yuuki is more interested in fulfilling her more lustful needs. Hijinks ensue.

The main meat and heart of the story is of Yuuki Yugano and her snarking. Every time she comments on something it was hilarious, which made for a fun read!

While I definitely enjoyed the story there are two small flaws with it. The first is the length, even for a light novel, I found it a little too short for my taste. (When comparing other titles such as No Game No Life and Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon.) And the notable lack of interior illustrations may turn a few people off from fully enjoying this Ebook.

While is brief its a fun ride while it lasts. If Eliezer Yudkowsky decides to continue this into a series. I will gladly pick up the sequel.

Fast-paced, fun.
Certainly made me think, but not on the level of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality or Three Worlds Collide by the same author.
Reminded me more of The Sword of Good, a free short story by the author.
Still, definitely worth the time and money, since it will cost you little enough of either.

A short novella that explores what "competent" people might do in a not-quite traditional isekai situation.

I enjoyed the subversion of tropes prevalent throughout, the absurd rationalizations of the protagonist, and poor angel-kun is going to have the weirdest couples therapy sessions after this.

10/Enjoyment.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book is an entertaining parody
Reviewed in Spain on May 4, 2019
For those of us who have already read some isekai light novels and manga, this book will left you with the feeling of it being too short, compared to other examples of the genre. But that's ok since it's clearly a parody. The author sets a premise for how the main character is, and develops the action from there following her internal logic.
At some points, though, I must warn you that the character will act at odds with a logic behaviour, self justifying herself later on, but that's all right if you keep in mind the parodic essence of this novel.

All in all, this book is a fun reading, and it will leave you wondering if maybe, just maybe it deserves a sequel.

I wouldn't call this a typical rational story so if you are searching for that, better look elsewhere, it had me chuckling all along and for the price it is definetly worth it
