I am a huge film fan. Next to literature, film is my next great love. For me, the main contributes for a great film involves the music, direction, production, acting, and how it impacts my life. With my 3.5 (yes, I am cheating) favorite film of all time, David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, it couldn't be more appropriate to have Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross work on and do the soundtrack. Originally when I saw that this monster was about three and a half hours of music, I was intimidated. Then I went and saw the film and was a bit disappointed that not all of the tracks (mainly Oraculum) was not featured. But then again, maybe that is what is so special about this soundtrack: while complimenting the film, it is able to stand on it's own as a work of art. That is the best way to describe this album: a work of art. From the two covers that start and end this album, this is an emotional roller coaster that, if you are like me, will leave you in tears once the album closes when How To Destroy Angels sings their last 'Is Your Love Strong Enough?"

I bought this after paying close attention to the sound during the movie. After the amazing job they did on The Social Network, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross did an even better one on this! Impressive ability to manipulate the listener/viewer's emotional state by the use of sound and music. Close your eyes, immerse yourself in it, and you will find yourself feeling cold, claustrophobic, tense, depending on where you are in the album. That does not mean it is not enjoyable as pure music in itself. Superbly crafted sonically, an audiophile album to be enjoyed in certain moods, hopefully with a fire burning and a drink :)
The only reason I knocked off a star is that it seems a rather long and almost laborious affair the way it is structured. It is meant to be heard in its entirety, and as such it may be a bit much. Maybe I don't have the musical and emotional stamina I once had, so your impression may vary.
That little gripe aside, a great album and definitely recommended.

Enjoying the movie and recalling liking the soundtrack I picked this up along with some other CDs via Amazon.

Complaint first: like many soundtracks (well... at least the handful I own, so I'm extrapolating a bit here...) it stands up pretty well on it's own, with some songs in particular being very good. But I think there is plenty on here (like other soundtracks) that do not stand up so well on their own. Of course, this makes plenty of sense as it is a soundtrack... meant to accompany a visual image. So this isn't really so much a criticism of the CD itself, but of soundtracks in general and applies, I think, in this instance.

Compliment: in general I like this soundtrack. Musically it's not too far from NIN and other Reznor products, but seeks what I feel is a moodier.. darker... place. To me this fits in well with the movie, so they work well together. It's also a nice piece to which to listen with headphones on. I think a nice pair of cans really bring out all this CD has to offer sonically, which, to a certain degree, I think is very much true of most music of this genre/style.

On the whole I find this to be a good "in the background" CD, but not something I would probably sit and listen to critically.

if you like the quieter instrumental NIN tunes, you will likely enjoy this collage of sounds with complex rhythems. Being a die-hard TOOL fan, I think NIN The Fragile is Reznor's best. I found many similarities to the parts of The Fragile...the parts without the anger. This set of albums is for the most part, quiet, and is best heard in a full range system. My first few listens were with a pair of muffs on a long flight to China and back. Good music to shut your eyes too and just listen. The other night I cranked it up at home while working on a project and I heard a whole new album.

The cover of 'Immigrant Song' on this album is fantastic. Otherwise, a lot of atmospherics (as you'd expect from a movie soundtrack). I enjoy it, but there's not much on this album that is standing out hugely to me like some of the tracks on Ghosts I - IV (which I'm starting to think was an extended "we can do movie soundtracks too!" audition. ;-)

Long time NIN fans who collect every "Halo" possible will likely not be disappointing. For me, its a good alternative to the yapping heads on Fox when driving in to work, if I'm not quite caffeinated and need the first track to kick my butt into gear and the rest to nudge me a bit more gently into awareness.

Don't get me wrong -- I enjoy this kind of music in its own right and this album is a solid example. I don't mean to diminish the various musicians' accomplishments and effort by saying that it's great to have on "in the background" while working, but ... it's GREAT to have on in the background while working! I listen to a lot of classical music while at the computer too, and it's nice to have other styles of instrumental music to ponder to. I could do without the very last song ("Is Your Love Strong Enough," as performed by How to Destroy Angels), but other than that Reznor & Ross have created a great soundscape.

This music is so good it's like it's its own genre. It's as if some new musical form has been created. I was stunned by the textures, the rhythms that got stuck in my head, the intensity. This is an album to hear again and again. Loud, raucous, lonely, disjointed, serene, quiet, slamming, pounding, stretching, insistent. Take "The Social Network" (which introduced me to Reznor and Ross, and an astonishing introduction to this musical format) and expand on it for more than 2 hours. Worth every penny.

After "Immigrant Song" bursts into your ears this triple set is fairly bland when compared to the much superior "Social Network" sound track album. I have been a fan of Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) since playing "Quake" on the PC. I felt his earlier collaboration with Atticus Ross bore excellent fruit but there is a serious problem with this album. The tracks often reminded me of NINs "Ghosts" album which is a collection of interesting soundscapes. Several times I wondered if Reznor had merely dusted off the earlier recordings, or even out takes from the sessions, and recycled them. Disappointing and too long. If you are new to Reznor this is not a true representation of what he is capable of.
