About the author

Gabrielle Mathieu lived on three continents by the age of eight. She’d experienced the bustling bazaars of Pakistan, the serenity of Swiss mountain lakes, and the chaos of the immigration desk at the JFK airport. Perhaps that’s why she developed an appetite for the unusual and disorienting. Her fantasy books are grounded in her experience of different cultures and interest in altered states of consciousness (mostly white wine and yoga these days). The Falcon Flies Alone is her debut novel. The Falcon Strikes is scheduled for early 2017. The series will conclude with The Falcon Soars.

As in the best novels, this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: by targeting Berona, the Water Demon in fact sets in motion the very events that will lead to her destruction. But this well-told tale also has a twist: the Water Demon is also the planet's First Mother, determined to protect its environment from the ravages of the human-like species, which include Elders and dwarves.
Berona is an appealing heroine, flawed but determined. The world she inhabits—which includes the Island Kingdom of Vendrisi, filled with artists and scientists, and the Mannite community of healers, warriors, and magicians as well as Berona's own homeland of Trea—is richly imagined and fresh. An excellent read. Can't wait to find out what happens in the next one!
While I enjoyed reading Gabrielle Mathieu's falcon series, when this series was brought to my attention, I couldn't wait to start reading! The blurb instantly reminded me of past stories that I loved and never forgot, and this one is equally special! While not perfect, this story paints a beautiful, if rather brutal, story of young Berona's life. It does tend to be overly graphic at times, and even resembles GoT toward the end with it's death toll, but considering the plot and setting, it works. Still, I'd like to see the story a little more thought out as the series progresses, as many of the places and the lore both about the people and the demons, could use a bit of explaining to make them feel more real. It's hard to picture a beautiful setting, without knowing anything else about the place, and there wasn't as much balance on world-building involving history and background as there was vivid scenery and bloody action, which aren't bad, but aren't leave the story less memorable than it could be.
Overall, I enjoyed Berona's story and seeing this world, but I like a bit more history and story-building in the first book of a series, so it wouldn't need as much explaining later on. I understood enough to get by, but often felt details were glossed over or skipped entirely when introduced to a new town or place. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series, and am excited to see what happens next!
I really liked the idea of a fantasy story with a soft main character forced to be strong who still stays soft and romantic throughout the book – also that cover is fantastic, although I normally don’t love covers with people on them! Girl of Fire was entertaining, a good read if you enjoy classic fantasy tropes – I liked it, I just did not love it.
I think at this point I’ve read many, many YA fantasy books, so it’s difficult for one to stand out – and a lot in Girl of Fire is promising, but the execution was so similar to what I’ve seen in so many other books of the genre that I didn’t think this stood out too much. I think that the other series by this author (The Falcon Series) stood out a lot more to me, because of how unique it is. I wish the internal monologue of the characters had been a little less, so as not to break the narrative so much. The story became much more engaging as it went on, with lots of adventure, magic and a bit dark, too.
If you love YA fantasies and are craving something with demons and lots of magic, you might want to check this out!
Pros: It is an engaging story with modern relationships and interesting viewpoints. I did like how it changed to different characters 1st person perspectives. I am looking forward to the next book!
Cons: At times, it did seem a little rushed, not enough time spent on the places that we were supposed to 'feel' something for and the relationship between Berona and Kai seemed a little forced. One second he was saying how he's not going to throw himself at her, there are other fish in the sea, the next he is heading out to sacrifice himself for her love.
Overall, I really enjoyed it and again am looking forward to the rest of the series! I was lucky enough to receive this book via Voracious Readers Only.
