The Girl From Ipanema: The Antonio Carlos Jobim Songbook [Audio CD] Jobim, Antonio Carlos
Amazon.com
This 1995 tribute to the late Brazilian bossa nova master draws from the cream of the Verve/Polygram jazz catalog. Saxophonist Stan Getz, who introduced the sublimely sensual bossa nova to North American audiences in the early '60s, is joined by vocalist João Gilberto on the well-known title track and by guitarist Luiz Bonfa on the exquisite "O Morro Nao Tem Vez." Sarah Vaughan ("Corcovado"), Billy Eckstine ("Felicidade"), Wes Montgomery ("How Insensitive"), and Oscar Peterson ("Wave") also turn in classic performances from the '60s. Jobim himself offers guitar and piano accompaniment on several tracks and duets with Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina on "Aguas de Marco." Although subsequent generations of lame lounge singers have robbed bossa nova of its original mystique, in its pure form, this music is unsurpassed in conveying an intimately romantic mood with carefree sophistication. --Rick Mitchell

"Once I Loved"
Words & Music By: Antonio Carlos Jobim/Ray Gilbert/Vinicius de Moraes
"Once I loved and I gave so much love to this love
You were the world to me
Once I cried at the thought I was foolish and proud
And let you say goodbye
Then one day from my infinite sadness you came
And brought me love again
Now I know that no matter whatever befalls
I'll never let you go
I will hold you close, make you stay
Because love is the saddest thing when it goes away
Love is the saddest thing when it goes away"
Truly a meaningful song and my all-time absolute favorite! Shirley Horn rendered the above lovely song beautifully. Her interpretation is superb, jazzy and Diana Krall-like. When you hear it the first time and don't know who's singing, you'd think it's Diana Krall. Other great versions of this Jobim classic are those of Frank Sinatra (Francis Albert Sinatra And Antonio Carlos Jobim) and Astrud Gilberto (The Astrud Gilberto Album).
This great compilation starts with the entrancing rendition of the great composer's most unforgettable staple and an award-winning classic, "The Girl From Ipanema" with Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto providing the smooth and unaffected vocals, and wraps up with another jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie's grand performance of "No More Blues."
One of the most beautiful tracks is from my all-time favorite jazz pianist, Oscar Peterson performing "Wave" with an equally charming arrangement by Claus Ogerman & His Orchestra. Claus Ogerman is one of the top arrangers from my list of favorites with Nelson Riddle, Jeremy Lubbock, Don Costa, Billy May and Marty Paich. The great jazz songbird Sarah Vaughan's version of "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars" is jazzy and soulful, with Frank Foster Orchestra and Bob James on piano. Charlie Byrd's artistry on guitar is showcased on "One Note Samba" with Stan Getz.
For me the very highlight is Wes Montgomery's impeccable version of "How Insensitive," with Claus Ogerman's fabulous arrangement and was recorded in 1966 for Verve Records. This is the best version I've ever heard and I just love it! What an awesome guitar playing from a terrific jazz giant and I always listen to it with a few repeats. Some of the finest jazz musicians on this performance are Ron Carter (bass), Ray Barretto (congas) and Harvey Shapiro (cello), among others.
Last but not least, listen to the First Lady of Jazz, the legendary Ella Fitzgerald's superb samba-ish rendition of "Desafinado - Slightly Out Of Tune." It will make you sing along and join her in harmony singing a song of love with a never ending melody, and you'll never be slightly out of tune again!
Well, what else can I say? With fifteen Jobim classics interpreted magnificently by the finest artists in the jazz scene, you'll never go wrong with this CD. It's a must-have not only for lovers of Bossa Nova music but also to all jazz aficionados. You may also want to check out some of his earliest albums produced by Creed Taylor in the '60s and '70s such as "Wave" with arrangements by Claus Ogerman, Eumir Deodato arranged albums "Tide" and "Stone Flower" to better appreciate his kind of music - the original classic Bossa Nova.

I will reference this recording as "sampling the Bosa Nova music." A great buy and real music enjoyment for your listening pleasure.
