Editorial Reviews

GIRL Z: My Life as a Teenage Zombie brings teenaged angst to an entirely new level when 16-year-old Becca is infected with a zombie virus and becomes one of the living dead. Still sentient and able to control the whole flesh-eating cravings, Becca struggles to find her place in a world where some of the dead eat the living while others try to fit into their old lives, only to be met by hostility and fear from former friends and family. "Written from Becca's point of view, we get a narrow and very realistic view of this chaotic new world from a self-absorbed teenager's tunnel vision. A very fun and readable introduction to a new series! --Dana Fredsti, author of Plague Town & Plague Nation, swordfighter, and actress in Army of Darkness

What's a pretty Latina supposed to do when her skin turns gray and breaks open in gooey sores that don't heal (I mean, she's had breakouts before, but this is FIERCE!). In C.A. Verstraete's Girl Z: My Life as a Teenage Zombie, Rebecca (Becca) Hernandez and her bff cousin Carmella (Carm) Sanchez are surprised when Carm's brother shows up on the porch and dies ... after scratching Becca. She starts to show symptoms of the zombie disease (like dying in the hospital), but the infection can be controlled in the young and healthy, so she is sent back home and off to a terrifying world: high school. She discovers prejudice she never encountered as a pretty Hispanic girl in the Illinois-Wisconsin area. Becca and Carm start off on a bad-driving road-trip odyssey to find their moms, trapped by the shuffling creatures. In many cases, they face greater danger from fear-crazed humans than from flesh-hungry zombies. The half-Zs come in many varieties: good and bad, determined to deal with the situation and determined to exploit the situation. Becca even finds love...when her body isn't trying to die. You can actually look at this story as a parable about the teenage condition. An orderly life is upended by forces and urges that are difficult to control. People you trust can turn on you, and sometimes you feel like you're going to die. Yep, that s being a teenager. Verstraete, whose background runs from journalism to designing one-twelfth scale dollhouse rooms, has come up with a clever way of telling her story from a zombie point of view without sinking to the Hungry ... eat ... BRAIINNSSS! level. Despite becoming one of the living dead, Becca is definitely still a teenager: me-centered, petulant, obsessed with her outward appearance, and slightly boy-crazy. She has her pity-party moments, she can be snarky and insulting, and all this gives her a refreshing real-ness. She's a girl who could talk your ear off ... and eat it, too. With Girl Z, Verstraete has shuffled to the head of the zombie-lit horde. May she never stumble! --Review by Terrance Mc Arthur, Kings River Life Online Magazine

Girl Z: My Life as a Teenage Zombie is a dark, zombie apocalypse novel about a Rebecca, a sixteen-year-old girl who contracts the dreaded zombie virus. The symptoms manifest slowly and relentlessly, turning her life upside-down with bizarre physical changes. Even when she finds herself falling for Gabe, a handsome part-Z, she's conflicted. Worse, hungry full-Z's are an ever- present threat! Can anything stop the deadly Z transformation - and is it too late for Becca to live as a human again? Told in first person from Becca's point of view, Girl Z is a different type of zombie apocalypse story, especially recommended for fans of the genre! --Midwest Book Review

About the Author

C.A. Verstraete has always wanted to be a writer for as far back as she can remember. As the family "bookworm," she knew her writing desire was a natural progression. She always read and still does, enjoying books by Barbara Taylor Bradford, Debbie Macomber, Stephen King, Mary Higgins Clark and many others. C.A.'s career has mostly been in newspapers and magazines, although fiction writing always called to her. Discovering online writing groups inspired her to get more involved in short fiction. Initially, the transition from nonfiction to fiction was hard, but she said it was always a heck of a lot of fun. C.A. grew up in Chicago, the third-generation to live in the two-story house bought by her Belgian-born grandfather in the mid-1900s. She now lives an hour's drive from Chicago, just over the border in Wisconsin. She has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Columbia College in Chicago. She also received various awards from Illinois and national press associations for nonfiction articles she has written. One of her pastimes is building dollhouses and miniature rooms, which has served as inspiration for nonfiction stories and even a Christmas eBook. She has also written a children's mystery, Searching For a Starry Night, A Miniature Art Mystery.
