Life has been busy and I've not had time to do a lot of selective reading, so I downloaded The Girl She Wanted. I was fully engrossed in 15 minutes and found it hard to put down after that. The morning after I started reading, we left for a three-day mini vacation and I continued to read from the passenger seat as we drove. I was trying my best to not appear aggravated that my husband wanted to talk and visit on the way to the beach, though I know I was doing a crappy job, and I ultimately put my tablet down and tried to enjoy his company like I always do, but my mind was stuck on this novel! We met six of our friends for this trip, and when I found any down time, I had my tablet in my face again, slightly annoyed when people interrupted me.....I was being a horrible friend, but I blame K.L. Slater for that. She knew what she was doing when she wrote this! The morning we left I got up early so I could FINALLY finish my reading. I'd been interrupted so many times at what seemed like every page- turning engrossing part of the story that I was THRILLED to be able to finish it all interrupted and was left with my jaw dropped and proud of the heroine. My husband was so glad to have me back and now I wish I could remember everything that happened on the weekend away with our friends! We are headed home now, but I'll wait until I get home to download the next of her books...I at least owe that to my husband!

Well, it has its ups and downs but that's because it's a great story! Take a husband, a wife, put a sister in the middle to add some drama, add some animosity between the husband and sister... Then toss in the sister being accused of murdering two people and watch the fireworks explode!
There's Social Services, a previous lost child for the couple, the current baby girl being hurt while in the sisters care, husband wanting sister to leave, wife wanting her to stay, husband believes she's guilty, wife believes she's innocent.
Oh Boy! The drama just doesn't stop! And NO, those aren't even the spoilers! Believe me! There's much, much more in this hard to put down read!

I highly recommend you grab a copy on the quick!!

In the first few pages suspicious characters show up already putting you at the edge of your seat. Our POV character Alexa is married with a toddler and her sister, fresh out of a nasty split, is staying at their home. The drama begins with her, at her job in the emergency room of the local hospital. Two patients have died unnecessarily and Alexa's sister is suspect number one which causes all kinds of drama. Her sister has some secrets (so does Alexa, it seems) and they begin to compound making her look all the more guilty, but as an avid reader of the mystery genre, I look for less obvious suspects--there are many. Her sister's co-workers, the doctor who blew the whistle, I can't help but add the ex because he sounds like a weasel who may have a grudge, Alexa's own husband is acting quite strange, and, of course, Alexa herself.

The story teeters, from one suspect to the next, which kept me constantly at the edge of my seat. So many twists and turns. The ending, however, was a bit disappointing. After such a suspenseful ride, I expected more. I wanted a big bang, but I didn't get it.

If you can’t trust your own sibling particularly one who’s been there for you when you’re at your lowest, who can you trust? That’s the question Alexa has to ask herself as the revelations surrounding two unusual deaths at her sister’s hospital. But is Carrie as guilty as the evidence suggests?

But Alexa’s loyalties are well and truly divided. Her sister has been there for her through thick and thin all her life. But Perry, her husband, is the man she’s chosen to spend the rest of her life with and have a gorgeous baby girl with. I couldn’t help but sympathise with this mixed up woman struggling to make sense of the events going on around. And that before you consider the blow to her confidence that motherhood has dealt; unable to leave the house with her daughter unless Carrie or Perry are by her side.

I have to mention the location. With Nottingham being the backdrop for this tense psychological thriller brought a warm and fuzzy to me. I’m a Nottingham girl originally so the references to familiar locations around the city and its suburbs was great for me.

The Girl She Wants is a thriller that made me chase my tail as I read. I wanted to be Alexa having that confidence in Carrie’s innocence but as I read the police based chapters the doubt crept in. As Alexa’s doubt grew so did my own… but then boom that climax … that was not what I expected in the slightest!!

I’m ashamed to say this is my first novel by K.L. Slater despite me having a number in my kindle. Fortunately for me, I loved The Girl She Wanted so I can’t wait to dive into another Slater creation when my TBR allows.

This book appeared to be treading water a bit in the middle, and that gave me time to ponder. It could be I am just irredeemably dim, but:
What does the title mean?
Why did Perry's work crew turn potentially violent towards him?
Why was there not a back-up borehole expert?
What hospital has nurses working a 9-5 shift?
How did the bereaved daughter obtain the doctor's address, or even suspect him?
And so on.
Further spoiler: the twist is not so much jaw-dropping as utterly ludicrous.

I ve noticed that often authors write several excellent books (mark Edwards springs to mind ) then it s as if they think that they can produce any old rubbish and people will buy it ! Well I did and this is rubbish
The plot was reasonable but the characters were shallow and cliched and the story plodded on getting worser and worse
By the end I was skimming the pages just to see who killed who and why
When compared to the authors previous books this might have been written by someone completely different and not at all talented , hopefully the next book will be up to standard

I made the mistake of purchasing this based on the 5-star reviews. This writer may well have a successful career based on her amazing novels, but this one is an absolute clunker. The plot is vaguely intriguing (despite the obvious lack of research in police procedures and the way a hospital would investigate reports of negligence). But the characters are wooden - Alexa is a nervy nonentity, jumping every time she hears the phone ring until she suddenly morphs into Nancy drew. Her banal internalised monologues made reading this a dreadful chore - chapters 10 to 12 particularly tedious. So much detail that adds nothing to the plot (but fills the pages). I skim read the rest of the book because it became clear the writer has a problem with focusing on what the reader needs to know and what can be safely left out. 'Gripping' is a word I would hesitate to use when describing this abomination. And my jaw didn't drop - it was my eyelids as they struggled to stay awake ploughing through the filler.

What a non stop roller-coaster of a ride. So many twist you get turned upside down and back again. I absolutely love KL Slater's books. I live in Nottingham so knowing all the places that are mentioned in the book makes it more exciting. It's an unputdownable, gripping and sometimes sad read, especially the letter at the end of the book, that really tugs your heartstrings. All in all a bloody fantastic read, I'd highly recommend.
