Longing for Something Bigger
From the Eisner Award-nominated Inio Asano, creator of Solanin and Nijigahara Holograph, comes one of his most challenging works yet; an intense teen romance set in what may at first glance be one of the sleepiest places in Japan.
When Koume and Keisuke*s relationship begins to take shape, it is apparent that they are both searching for something. Maybe Keisuke wants something more than a kiss from the fair Koume. Maybe Koume is looking for someone better than Misaki, the local playboy. But what they find in each other over the course of a summer might be far greater than anything they were expecting.
Their lives are going to change. And this will all transpire before high school exams!

About the Author
Inio Asano (born 1980) is considered by many to be one of the biggest new names in manga of the '00's. Debuting in 1998 Asano was immediately thrust into the manga spotlight by earning praise from luminaries such as Naoki Yamamoto and Shin Takahashi. His acsent to stardom was very quick, and regretfully, the young man went into a bit of a slump soon after. But after four years of struggle and soul-searching as an assistant to some of Japan's most artisticly respected comickers, Asano came back to become the voice of the modern Japanese adolescent.
His breaktrough work SOLANIN captivated the globe earning him recognition in Japan and an Eisner Award nomination in North America. SOLANIN was later adapted into a cultish motion picture further cementing Asano's place amongst outsiders globally. Since 2002 Asano has penned 10 graphic novel series, dozens of short stories, and is now making in-roads as one of Japan's more popular graphic designers. In 2014 his most recent English language release Nishigahara Holograph was selected as one of the best graphic novels of the year by Publishers Weekly, Comics Alliance, Comics Resources, and Good OK Bad.

God, I've never read something that's checked all the tiny little boxes in my mind, but this does it...I feel so sad and empty though. I feel so weird that this isn't my own repulsive life, but others share similar experiences. It's like I'm spiraling and this book is forcing me to face a reality I'm too much of a coward to face. If you enjoy feeling hopeless and troubled, have fun sport! I like this book a lot, but I don't think I'll be ready to pick it up again for a reread anytime soon, too many skeletons in my closet I suppose.

To start off A Girl by the Shore is certainly written for mature audiences. To start off there is soft core p*rn in this manga. But please don’t let that take away from how brilliant this manga is drawn and written. The story is so genuine and different from anything I’ve read so far. It will make you hurt all the way through, but it teaches you a lesson. The last manga that made me truly think was Orange (which I also recommend). I believe as long as you’re of the appropriate age you should definitely buy this manga. It’s one that you’ll never forget. (I’ve been thinking about it ever since I read it a couple weeks ago.)

A beautiful illustration of a high-school teen discovering herself and dealing with her sexual desires and heartbreak. The best part is that it is a one volume manga. No bulls***, the story is completed in one volume which I loved. Furthermore the art is AMAZING. The characters are relatable and the pacing is great. A must read for this good price.

For the sheer visual look of it, I would have rated this book five stars. But the font is too faint and small, which takes away from the overall reading experience. But, the book itself is the absolute perfect size. And the illustrations are sumptuous! I would define this book as a deep psychological drama for Adults. Material should be rated for mature audiences only. I do recommend this book if you like foreign films about relationships, because that’s the overall feel of the story. I love this book, just not the tiny font size. Hence the four stars, as opposed to the five stars it deserves.

A girl on the shore isnt a manga with an overly complex storyline. In fact, it’s a story showcasing the feelings of a girl getting over a love. within this manga you’ll find yourself as an outsider looking into an experience, a distant memory with randomly placed moments throughout this moment in her life. a story so relatable, of pain, of the consequences of life, and learning to let go. a story of emotional trauma and unavailability. a story of surviving the pains of love. in the end we’ll be okay, a story of letting things be. a story of letting things go.
this isn’t going to be the best story you’ve ever read, but instead you’ll be reminded of something bittersweet, and even that is special.

caution, this manga features multiple sexual encounters, and subjects about suicide.

I bought this because I really enjoyed Inio Asano’s solanin.
I didn’t really like this one though. The characters are fairly one dimensional and there’s way too much sex.

I don't even know where to start.... This manga is better than I expected. I'm only on Chapter 3, but I like it so far. Just be careful, this manga is for mature audiences. I had no idea this was actually gonna show nudity.... Yeah... I didn't really do too much research on it. I'm not the type of person to be into things like that, but I really don't mind it. Even so, I'm very intrigued and I can't wait to read more!

I really enjoy most of Inio Asano's work. Something to note though if that even though the description of this product says "Teen Romance" this may not be a book suitable for all teens. There are depictions of sex between the two main characters, just something to be aware of when buying this book.
Overall a sad but good read.

The artwork is good. The scenery, backgrounds are lovely. The characters are kind of neutral. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between characters.
the story... Is neutral too. I did not like it or dislike it. It is just a story. Two teenagers having sex to release frustrations. Not much more to tell. No need to dig deeper in the story and try to find a transcendental meaning. As simple as hydrogen.

Another excellent example of the talented Inio Asano
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 7, 2018Verified Purchase
Another excellent example of the talented Inio Asano. While this does contain explicit scenes, it's not the driving fact of this book. More often than not, the characters feelings, thoughts, even the pain they've experienced is told through the beautifully drawn backgrounds and scenery. It's a very bleak world that Isobe and Koume live in, and often at times the book can feel very heavy with its depressive atmosphere.
There are some very minor issues with the translation, but the art is great as always by Inio Asano, and it is worth the read.

The manga had beautiful drawings! I didn’t realise it would be as ranchy as it was.. but the artwork was lovely. The story itself was a little weird, I thought the ending was a bit cut off.

Gather The Wind

Primarily a story about relationships. Does not shy from showing early sexual experiences. I found the characters more human for the flaws shown. The end shows personal growth though it is both saddening and cheering.
