First there is the setup of introverted Theo's character, just your average teenage good guy, doing teenage guy stuff. He's been friends with the girl next door, Belle, since they were little kids. As they grew older they grew apart, as she became part of the popular cheerleader set. They barely say “Hi” anymore. But after a breakup with her bully of a boyfriend, she starts looking at Theo in a new light. He always treated her right. There is a nicely paced gradual build-up as they fall deeply in love with each other. Everything is going perfectly.
But in the back of your mind, you know IT is coming. After all, how can she be a ghost?
Then it gets there, and IT happens. This beautiful, loving, so full of life teenage girl is killed in a tragic accident. It hurts. It hurts bad. I suppose it would hit different people with different intensity levels, but for me, it hit me really hard, almost as if I really knew this girl personally. Theo, of course, was in agony. He has no idea how he is going to go on living without her.
But then she comes to him, at night while he's dreaming. But it's not just a dream. She's real, and they can talk, and laugh, and kiss, and they go places together. All she has to do is take his hand and they can go anywhere. This happens not just one night, buy every night.
It's hard to draw the line here, between what is real, and what is not. Theo believes it is all real, and who am I to doubt the beliefs of a fictional character? I do believe that people's spirits go on after death, but how much do we really know? This is an interesting proposition.
I rest of the story is how Theo deals with his own life after loosing Belle. It is extremely well written, and for teenagers these are very deep, mature characters. There is a lot of human interest and how people deal with difficult feelings. It was also very interesting to read this simple, clean teenage romance from a male point of view. It's different from your average “ghost” story. Not a lot of action in this one, but a beautifully written story of love.
I received a free advance copy of this book from the Kindle Scout program.
Typically, we always read a romance coming from a female character's perspective. Rarely do we find well-written books from a male perspective. I mean, we do, but this one has just hit cut out a few books. In terms of writing. This is a movie hit waiting to happen.
I was so excited to hear this novel was chosen to be published, as the excerpt on Kindle Scout had me extremely intrigued. The writing immediately pulled me into Theo’s little world, which was quite wonderful. As Belle was introduced, she was the beautiful addition that made this novel complete. They’re just lovely, both individually and as a couple. I haven’t read many novels in which the characters this young are actually relatable, or as mature, as most of the cast in this novel.
While the blurb explains the gist of the story, I was not prepared for the emotional punch in the gut. I cried. I cried reading a YA novel. Maybe I cried because I have a son about their age, or because I know the pain of losing a first love. I can say with certainty that this author captured raw emotion brilliantly.
To put it bluntly, my heart just broke for the main character. The narrative is from his POV, and he is a very sweet young man. He starts off with one friend, goes through a few months of being on top of the world, then, he ends up right where he started; madly in love with the girl he can’t have. I do, however, love the resilience he exhibits.
With all of these pros, I do have one con; I feel as if the story didn't wrap up completely. There are quite a few unanswered questions, which seemed a little out of character for such a detailed novel. This doesn't change my opinion, because the story as a whole is outstanding.
In today’s society, this is a clean novel I would definitely approve for ages thirteen-plus.
This is definitely a book i won't forget anytime soon.
