From New York Times bestselling author Karen Harper comes a novel based on the lives of two amazing sisters . . .
One sailed the Titanic and started a fashion empire . . .
The other overtook Hollywood and scandalized the world . . .
Together, they were unstoppable.
They rose from genteel poverty, two beautiful sisters, ambitious, witty, seductive. Elinor and Lucy Sutherland are at once each other’s fiercest supporters and most vicious critics.
Lucy transformed herself into Lucile, the daring fashion designer who revolutionized the industry with her flirtatious gowns and brazen self-promotion. And when she married Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon her life seemed to be a fairy tale. But success came at many costs—to her marriage and to her children . . . and then came the fateful night of April 14, 1912 and the scandal that followed.
Elinor’s novels titillate readers, and it’s even asked in polite drawing rooms if you would like to “sin with Elinor Glyn?” Her work pushes the boundaries of what’s acceptable; her foray into the glittering new world of Hollywood turns her into a world-wide phenomenon. But although she writes of passion, the true love she longs for eludes her.
But despite quarrels and misunderstandings, distance and destiny, there is no bond stronger than that of the two sisters—confidants, friends, rivals and the two “It Girls” of their day.

About the Author
Review
“[...] fans of Kathleen Tessaro and Penny Vincenzi will enjoy the layers of intrigue and the sweeping plot. Harper’s ability to shift between raw ambition and tender compromise makes this family-focused novel a genuine delight.” (Booklist)
“In this fictionalized biography, Harper defines “it” as the charm and charisma that defined the Sutherland sisters. Not only is this a fabulous portrait of the time, but it is also a deftly crafted portrait of the complexity of sisterhood.” (RT Book Reviews (starred))

Lucy would become known as Lucille, a world renowned fashion designer fur the rich and famous. She made an advantageous marriage to Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon and lived a near fairy tale life, but one that would be marked by scandal after her ill-fated voyage on the Titanic.
Her sister Elinor would make a bad marriage and be unlucky in love but would go one to write a number of racy and scandalous novels, becoming a well known authoress. She then went on to Hollywood, where she would be celebrated for her work and becomes involved in writing quite a number of well-received screenplay.
This book tells the their stories, and the tale is definitely engaging. They led really interesting lives in a time when women were often not mistresses of their own destinies. Somehow these women managed to live exciting and full lives. The story of their lives is riveting. The book kept me turning the pages with pleasure.
Not so much this novel. It gallops along at an uneven pace, not really building enough depth to the characters. I thought it seemed like a pretty cool pair of feminist sisters - one, who would change fashion; one, who was a writer. The characters are unfortunately rather shallow in the sense that they're not particularly well-developed, and so I didn't feel much connection or sympathy for either of them.
Then came the Titanic scene. Brief and no real sense of what was going on, and to boot, the author got some pretty significant, well-known historical details wrong - writing about the weather conditions being windy and the ocean being choppy. (C'mon, James Cameron's "Titanic" came out in 1997 and that was meticulously researched for detail, surely everybody has seen that? Everybody knowns how clear and calm the night the Titanic sank was, it's a well-known piece of Titanic/historical lore.) So that threw me off while reading.
Not bad for a beach read, but don't expect to learn anything in-depth about these two interesting ladies from this novel.
Was not familiar with the provocative Sutherland sisters, Nellie and Lucy, whose lives are a fascinating read on feminism in the Victorian Era. Their trailblazing independence is an inspiration to the modern day woman. Loved the focus on forging their own careers despite the fact that such a thing was looked down on for women of a certain class. The book opens upon meeting their muse Lily Langtry who sets the stage for the life they would lead.
Harper definitely has a talent for writing a good romance novel. She is almost like a big sister giving advice on which men to watch out for. I think she is an author who has truly found love because her life experience shines through her writing. The conversations with the Victorian men and their poetic words and chivalry manners had me swooning. Loved the naughty skinny dipping scene.
Were there points early on in the novel that the writing was rushed and not fluid - Yes. But I blame the editor for those issues more than the writer. At the beginning of "It Girls" Harper tends to drop facts rather than weaving them into the story line. In spite of these minor flaws, the subject matter was so enthralling that I couldn’t put the book down. I became obsessed with the incredible story of these two amazing women’s lives.
Fans of Downton Abbey will love this fast paced read. Travels from London to Paris, Croatia even and ending in the Jazz Age of Hollywood, there's something for everyone here.
