This is a cool and understated look. There are plenty of air vents so that you actually don't get hot-headed or get that helmet head look when you take this off. Giro is a well-known brand and the quality of craftsmanship shows. The design and placement of everything, from the straps, to the floating visor, to the multiple fit settings on the buckle and back adjustment shows that these folks know what they are doing.
I was even able to install a small light to the back of this helmet for extra visibility during nighttime rides.
Whether you bike on the busy streets or go to the not so busy get-aways, this is such a small investment to protect your noggin.
-color ensures that people see me on the road
-adjustable and can tighten to fit multiple users
-keeps my brains inside my head when crazy drivers inevitably hit me
-visor helps block some sun from your eyes
-straps are very long and dangle in your way (but most outdoor stores can cut/melt them for free once you get the helmet fully adjusted for your head)
-wearing a helmet can ruin your hairstyle (but so does dying...)
Anyway, my boyfriend's helmet is a cheap-o no-name brand, and on a recent ride I gave him my Giro to wear since I had just gotten a new Specialized helmet and wanted to try it out. This helmet looks fine on both men and women, btw. Well, he went over the handlebars on a tight curve. Broke his collarbone in two places, very nearly a compound fracture. He's going to need a plate or pins put in. It was freaking terrifying. Scarier still though? He hit the ground with his head first. The back of his head took the main hit, and his clavicle hit the ground after that. So when I think about how bad his break was and then imagine that his skull took a hit harder than that? ::shudder::
The Giro did its job beautifully. No head injury, no concussion. It honestly didn't even dent, although it got pretty badly scuffed. Now, can I say with absolute certainty that his cheap helmet wouldn't have done just as good a job? No, of course not. But I will say that the helmet saved a bad situation from being way worse, maybe saved his life, and at the end of the day I'm glad he was wearing a dependable brand. He is too: I'm online now buying another one for me and one of his very own. :)
