Not to complain about a competitive product, but a recent incident convinced me that Gitzo is the only way to go if you value your equipment and shoot with big glass. During a photo workshop led by a National Geographic Pulitzer prize-winning photographer, my wife's Nikon camera and 600mm lens went crashing to the ground on one of our Manfrotto tripods. Fortunately, the back bumper of our SUV broke the fall and there was no permanent damage to the lens or camera, once I repaired the lens hood which bore the brunt.
The Manfrotto uses levers with a clamping presser to hold the legs in the extended position. Unfortunately, there is no adjustment as the rubber bushings wear out. With a heavy camera/lens setup, once it starts to slip, it eventually just collapses as your camera and lens spill onto the ground.
Gitzo, on the other hand, uses a twist grip to tighten the legs. You can tighten it as much as you want, unlike the lever-style grips. Also, the carbon fiber legs are super strong and extremely light.
Best of all, this tripod can extend to massive heights! I am 6'4" and most tripods are nearly impossible for me to use if I want to aim my lens upwards on a tall building, or to take a shot of an eagle flying overhead. Or, if you photograph weddings or groups of people, this tripod will put your lens well above the crowd, letting you climb a ladder to get the shot.Read more ›
The Gitzo box was very dusty and old looking. The bag that it was in looked like it had been sitting in on a warehouse floor for a month. One of the accessory boxes inside was crushed. As soon as I took it out of the box for a test shoot, one of the leg joints was broken and would not tighten. Upon closer inspection, the leg section looked quite worn and used; definitely not new or poorly inspected at the factory.
Given the price of this tripod, I was very surprised by the quality control of this tripod.
