Until it was taken away from her.
Several years later, she's still doing only that. Surviving. She's content with the life she has and the few friends. At first sight, one may think she's weak but is, in fact, actually a strong person, a motivated character to leave behind all the nasty stuff from her past and to rise above it all. She manages to prove she is better than her mother, for one.
Things really do change for her when she meets Travis Valentine. Remember him? Oh, I couldn't forget about him! When I first met him in Give Me Love, he was the overprotective but hot older brother. Tall, blond hair and green eyes. Oh and he was scruffy, did I mention that? Nasty job that slowly eats away at him, he admitted to not sleeping enough and smoking far too much.
Anyway, turns out, there are times when a one-nightstand does not remain a one-nightstand and Quinn's path crosses with Travis' and well, sparks fly. Add in the Mob, a crazy but loving family - the Valentines - with the Jamieson band and Travis' friends, things will go down. You'll melt, you'll laugh and you'll munch on your nails, ruining your nail polish because there's some action in it to keep you on your toes too.
It was bound to happen. Kate McCarthy does not disappoint with the second book of this series.
I love the glimpses we get of Jared and Evie; Mac and Jake ---> these two will kill me, for sure and of course, the Badass Brigade.
Travis is a fave of mine. Has been since book #1. But that doesn't mean I can't have a soft spot for Casey and Jake. Both of them would deserve some cuddling.
"You're a survivor, and on the inside that makes you more beautiful than you can possibly imagine. Do you think I want perfect? No one is ever that. Perfect is for people who don't know how to be real, and I don't want any of that. I want you." ~ Travis
^^ Now tell me, how couldn't you melt?
Jared, Mac and Travis are the Valentines but there is also a band called Jamieson that has Evie, Henry, Frog, Jake and Cooper. Mac is manager of this band. Jared works with Travis, Casey and Coby at a consulting firm that handles dangerous situations. This whole series is centered around the Valentine family and their friends.
Give Me Love starts with Jared and Evie. That was a very cute story. Now you have Give Me Strength which is Travis and Quinn. Quinn has never been wanted. Not by her mother. Not by her step dad David, he abuses her. She doesn't even know who her dad is. Just feels like she is alone. but the only people that she has at this point is Lucy and Rick, her neighbors. It takes a lot of Quinn to open up and let people in. Lucy wants her to have a life, with friends and of course a hot guy. Here walks in Travis. They meet at a bar one night, feeling like she should take that step, sleeps with Travis but leaves in the morning because you know how we all would feel in the morning after waking up with a gorgeous guy but realizing you acted like a hussy when you are not really like that. That morning she has to up her interview with none other then Mac for Jamieson Records! Can you imagine what is going to happen?? You will have to read and see..
I really loved this story. It has so much depth and heart. You will not be able to help but fall in the love with the whole story, the characters. EVERYTHING! Kate did an awesome job keeping the characters the same as in Give Me Love. Sometimes authors have a tendency to change them, not meaning to but all the same, they are not the same characters. It seems like a lot of people in this story but once you read it, you understand and can comprehend who is who and all of their different personalities. This story will have you laughing, crying, freaking the hell out and of course WTF!! I was shocked at some things. I just totally didn't catch on as to what might happen. I thought it would be pretty straight forward and was just shocked on my ass that I didn't see some things coming! Love that!!!
Travis of course is a hottie but what I love most about him is how he fights for Quinn. She is very hesitant and I can totally understand why but he just doesn't give up on her. Its a beautiful thing when you have someone like that and I think that Kate portrayed him very well. Quinn is a sweetheart. She is always thinking of others and just doesn't feel like she deserves anything nice and lovely in her life. Her mother and step dad really did a messed up job on her. She needs positivity in her life and she gets that with the Valentine family and friends. She is finally apart of something and she doesn't know how to deal with that. The chemistry between Travis and Quinn is hot, on FIRE!!! I was happy with that. In GML that was my only complaint, I wanted more and I got more in GMS. Now with what is coming up, hoping for MORE MORE MORE!!
I loved all the characters. Travis, Quinn, Mac, Jared, Evie, Jake, Henry, Casey, Cooper, Frog, and there is so many more to come! All very unique and loveable. I just cannot wait for more.

Kate made up for the lack of erotica with a great story that includes all the necessary ingredients. A rock star and band with tons of friends, and a family with hard hot alpha males who make you drool, some badass heroines with tragedy in their lives, and of course the love that ties all the craziness together.
There were some intimate scenes in the book of course or it wouldn't be a romance but Kate did it tastefully that a young adult could still read it. But the story is what drew me in. I got her first book about Evie and read it in one sitting then immediately bought this one. Neither disappointed. The characters and story lines were well thought out and will keep you reading. And of course you get to experience the Aussie world and talk from the characters. I've always wanted to incorporate the word "bloody hell" into my vocabulary but I never remember to do it ha!
So pick up Kate's books! You won't be disappointed! She's on my favorite author list now! Can't wait for the next book, thanks so much Kate keep writing!

4.5 STARS FOR TRAVIS & QUINN!
This is the second book in the 'Give Me' series. The series follows new, upcoming rock band, Jamieson, crime fighting ‘badass brigade’ Jamieson and Valentine, their friends, families and the crazy, mind-blogging sagas, baddies, shootings, kidnaps and general madness that comes with them!
In the first book, 'Give Me Love', we met Jamieson vocalist and front woman, Evie, and the swoonworthy Jared Valentine!
'Give Me Strength' gives us Travis Valentine, Jared’s sexy, long haired older brother, and Quinn Salisbury. Quinn has just landed the job working for Jamieson. She is assitant to Mac, Jamieson’s manager and the youngest and only female Valentine.
A chance meeting with Travis in a bar, on the first night out Quinn has had in three years, turns out to be much steamier than she’d ever imagined it would be. When she sneaks out before Travis wakes, she doesn’t expect to see him again. Until she realises he is the older brother of her new employer. Insert awkward moment here!
But Quinn has secrets in her past that have left her incapable of giving or receiving love. It’s as much as she can do to get through each day without social faux pas, panic attacks and mental break downs, so holding down a relationship is a definite no-no!
“I’m really sorry,” I whispered. “I can’t do this.”
“Can’t do what?”
“Life,” I muttered under my breath. “It wasn’t meant for me.”
But Travis isn’t so easily swayed. And as he shows that he is determined not to let Quinn go so readily, her past catches up with her, just to complicate things further.
But oooobviously, Travis is part of the ‘badass brigade’ (Cue A-Team music) so who else better qualified to clear Quinn’s little mess up than Travis and his badass buddies and brothers?!
“If you haven’t yet noticed, my brothers all have a knight in shining armour complex.”
“So what happens when they rescue their fair maiden, Mac? The knight complex doesn’t just disappear.”
Mac snorted. “You’ve met Evie, haven’t you? She’s a full time trouble magnet. Jared chose well.” she turned her eyes on me. “I’m starting to think Travis has too.”
Ok, so Quinn’s mess is anything but little. This book involves kidnappings, shootings, threats, scary criminals, blackmail, deadbeat parents, violence, lies, secrets, death and unfortunately, multiple chairs were harmed in the making of this story. If you like your romance with a double side of action and drama, you’re in luck!
“Don’t you all get escorted everywhere you go by hot badass guys when s***’s going down?”
“S***’s not going fown,” Lucy informed him. “S*** is currently contained.”
I have to say, I didn’t enjoy this book quite as much as I adored Jared and Evie’s story. I felt like the edges were a little rougher and some of the scenes were a little rushed and unclear. I don’t know why that is, because this is the third book I’ve read from Kate McCarthy, and in both other instances, her writing has been flawless. I’ll chalk it up as a one-off.
However, I still did really enjoy this. My feelings for Quinn went back and forth. Sometimes she annoyed me a bit. Now, Quinn has had a really s***ty upbringing and then when she thinks she’s getting her life on track, it gets even s***tier… so I get that she was defensive and closed off… but her reluctance to get with Travis frustrated me. I think it was because one minute she’s falling into bed with him and the next minute she’s all like ‘Ohhh no, can’t possibly be with a man.’ Make your mind up, honey! Don’t wanna give a man like Travis a bad case of blue balls!!
“I know what Travis was like before you, and i know what he’s like since you, and I like the latter.” Casey’s voice was firm as his eyes held mine. “He smiles like he means it, even after a long s***ty day like he’s dealing with today.” Casey tapped a finger to his temple. “Up here, there’s you at the back of all that, making his day not so s*** because at the end of it, he gets you.”
Travis I liked. Blonde hair pulled back in a ponytail, rippling muscles, crime fighting ninja skills, trained in hostage negotiation… what’s not to like, right? He’s pretty sweet on Quinn from the get-go, too, which I liked. He sees her, he wants her, he goes after her. No bulls*** from his end. Brilliant.
“Every day I get up, tired from not sleeping, and I go to work and do what I do. Late at night I come home and go to bed for another sleepless night, and the whole time there’s a weight on my chest that’s so f***ing heavy it leaves me feeling like I can’t breathe. When I’ve got hold of you, somehow it doesn’t feel so heavy anymore.”
So when you find out a little plot twist at the end, I was like ‘Aaah man. Travis, you goon!!’ But, that’s when things went from good, to really good…
I couldn’t put the book down for the last part. We’d had a couple of incidences before this point, but nothing too epic. Well, there’s a turning point when s*** suddenly gets real and all hell breaks loose. But of course, you’ll have to read the book to find out more about all that.
“Some of us have to learn how to save ourselves.”
I didn’t feel that the sex scenes were as frequent or as steamy in this book. What there was great, and well written and pretty damn hot. But I’m not looking back on this book thinking ‘well that was scorching!’ There’s a bit of sexy-time, but not tonnes. This book is more about Quinn finding herself, learning to trust, discovering her inner strength (as the title suggests) and all the drama surrounding her.
“When you’re shown every day you’re not worth being loved, you tend to believe it.”
I mentioned it in my previous review, but I have to mention it again… the surrounding cast in this book is absolute genius. There are so many supporting characters and all of them play huge parts in making this series what it is. It could easily get very confusing, with so many names being banded about, but it doesn’t. Kate writes it so well that you feel like don’t only know each person by name, but their personality also. And feeling that you know them all so well, feeling a fondness for each of them individually, means that reader’s will be keen to read each of their own books. Well played, Ms. McCarthy! I applaud you.
“We’re your friends now, Quinn. Granted, we might not know you that well yet, but I know enough. We all know enough to see the sweetness in your smile and the shadows in your eyes. If you need courage, Quinn, know that we’re standing behind you.”
I believe the next book, 'Give Me Grace', is Casey and, you guessed it, Grace’s book. Casey is Travis’s best friend, fellow badass and Jenson Ackles lookalike. Yes, ladies, there’s reason enough to read book #3! And Grace, we get introduced to, very fleetingly, in the epilogue of 'Give me Strength'. So that should be fun and games. I reeeeally want to read Henry’s book! Also, what I assume with be Mac and Jake’s book. In fact, I want to read them all. That will be one hell of an extended family once we’ve seen them all settled and married with kids! Imagine the BBQs!
Anyway… I’m rambling now… chatting and about BBQs and such. So I’ll leave this there. If you’re into Kristen Ashley books, romantic suspense, action/drama kind of books, with men fighting crime and their ladies causing them crime related headaches, you’ll love these books!

Review by Smitten's Book Blog
Back to Jared and Quinn, I love a strong Alpha Male in the story like Jared but also a strong female character who knows what to do with a chair! Thanks to Quinn’s stepdad the Italian maffia is after Quinn and at first she wants to solve her own problems by doing what she’s always done, run away and start over. But this time it is Jared holding her back. Jared who showed her that there is something worth fighting in life for. Quinn had an awful, awful past, I even shed a few tears for her. But thanks to Jared and her own dose of willpower and strength she is able to overcome this and finally in many years – to move on. What a night in a bar can do to a girl! ^_^
This book was once again full of Romance, Comedy, and angsty moments especially for Quinn, I wanted to punch that stepdad of hers baaaaaadly! I can highly recommend this series by Kate McCarthy. As she writes a mean Epilogue too! And what is better, the books so far timeline wise and epilogue wise are all tied in together. You might be able to read every book as a standalone but the story will be better understood if you start from book one, Give me Love.
I didn't think a second book could be as strong as the first but I enjoyed this one more, probably because there was more emotion and maybe because the foundations had been laid in Give Me Love I was itching to see what all the supporting characters were up to. The character interactions are so natural and also often hysterical and you will most likely find yourself laughing out loud as I was.
I never go into the story in a review, that's what the blurb is for and I don't want to give anything away except my opinion - bottom line, buy it (but read Give Me Love first if you haven't already), you won't be sorry :D
