I like the central characters of the story better than some of Wise's minor
ones, but in general, good striking scenes all the way; with some exceptionally
good dialog in the first 2/3 of the novel. Worth a sequel, I hope!
To be completely honest I did not buy this book. It was given to me by a member of my writing group and I was asked to read it. At first I didn’t believe I could do the book the justice it deserved, as I am not a fan of this genre (Sci-fi). However, after completing the novel I am quite pleased to say I was pleasantly surprised to the point that I might actually consider reading another book in this genre before the next year is out.
Mr. Wise proves with his first breakthrough novel that he is not only a superb writer, but has an amazing feel for this genre. His writing is strong, the use of prose powerful and his dialogue extremely well executed. It is clear from reading this novel that he is not only an educator, but has much experience in the theater as well. The main characters in this story are well developed and what I found so interesting was that they were from another galaxy and still managed to maintain a bit of an earthling quality. When explorers reach new worlds and are able to maintain two human emotions along the way, love and compassion, interesting things will occur: and they do in “Give Us the Fire.”
This novel was more fun to read then I ever thought possible. Mr. Wise, even with his dry sense of humor, did make me laugh in a few places. There is a lot going on in this novel. It held my interest and made me want more. I would be very interested in reading his next novel. Nice Job!
