After seeing some of the reviews, I decided to go ahead and buy this movie as well. I was very pleased and enjoyed the movie. It's nothing serious like the first two Rocky movies, but light hearted action fun. It pretty quick paced so you don't get bored. I'd compare it more to being similar to Rocky IV in terms of pacing. The story is simple enough about a young, white boxer who, through a turn of bad luck, finds himself in the poorhouse and has to box to settle his dad's gambling debts. The acting is believable unlike the recent Star Wars Attack of the Clones fiasco. Cuba Gooding and James Marshall both put in great performances. The boxing, although a little over the top sometimes,is still great to see although I'd like to have seen longer training sequences. The quality of the dvd picture is great as well. What they don't mention on Amazon's techincal data is that the dvd has both a widescreen and standard full format presentation on either side of the disc so you can watch the movie whatever way you want. I'd definitely recommend this disc for the boxing movie enthusiast.

Excellent Movie. One of my favorite movies that these actors made together.

Cuba Gooding Jr. is great in this movie, no wonder he is a great movie star and James Marshall doesn't get enough credit as an actor, he needs to play more roles like this... they way the filmed this movie was great... old fashion, made you feel you were right there with them.

Cuba Gooding Jr. was an upcoming star at this point, it just was starting out in his carrer... look at him now.

GREAT MOVIE... GET IT.. YOU'LL ENJOY IT.

Type "Gladiator" into any search engine for movies, and you'll get pages and pages of Russell Crowe's gladiator epic. Yet, at the bottom of those lists, you may just find this little gem that you've never heard of. If you are a fan of pugilistic big-screen experiences, this is one that at the very least will keep you entertained.

For a basic plot summary, "Gladiator" tells the story of Tommy Riley (James Marshall), a white teenage youngster who (via parental circumstances) is moved into an all-black school and neighborhood. After having enough of the constant bullying and needing money badly, Tommy is recruited into a shady boxing circuit by Pappy Jack (Robert Loggia). After befriending similar hard-luck case Lincoln Haines (Cuba Gooding Jr.), Tommy runs headlong into "big boss" Jimmy Horn (Brian Dennehy) when a huge conflict of interest rises between them.

"Gladiator", in terms of themes, is about as simple a movie as ever was made. I remember watching it off television as a kid and even then being about to follow the themes. While that simplicity keeps it from being a classic, it also makes sure that the movie ages pretty well. Whether you watching this movie in theaters in 1992 or on your flat-screen in 2014, it plays pretty much the same.

Perhaps what shines most from this movie, though, is the performance by Brian Dennehy. That is what I remembered most from the original viewing and what drew me towards finding it again. Along the way, though, I noticed great performances from Gooding Jr. and Ossie Davis as well.

If you are not a fan of boxing movies, I would say you can probably skip this one, as without an appreciate of the boxing-related themes the rest of the narrative will be a bit too simplistic to hold your interest. If you love the "sweet science", though, this one will at least entertain you with some drama and adversity themes.

Gladiator is an awesome boxing movie. To me this is the only other good one next to the Rocky`s. Very well made, stellar fight scenes and great performances especially from Brian Dennehy. Forget Southpaw which is basically Gladiator and Rocky mixed together.

Great product. Great movie. I was on the hunt to replace this movie for awhile for my mom. Her movie was damaged and it meant the world to her. This movie holds many memories for her while my Father was alive and when I found it and had it delivered to her as a surprise she was so excited that it brought tears to her eyes. Thank you for bringing a smile to her face.

First, I have to say that this movie is a lot of fun to watch.

A white guy named Tommy (James Marshall) moves to a neighborhood predominantly black and hispanic and has trouble fitting in this ghetto high school, but he has to defend himself and he is discovered by a corrupt boxing promoter. He is successful in his first fight and his big man has a lot of gambling debts so the owners of the boxing business Horn (Brian Dennehy) and Pappy Jack (Loggia) use this as a tool to keep him fighting. Somehow, there is a good old and friendly cornerman (Ossie Davis) that has not been corrupted even though he has spent his entire life in this violent game, through him we know the story of Horn.

Of course he is in a world of underground illegal boxing and you can expect elbows, head butts and the occasional punch under the belt when the referee is distracted; but kicks to the face when the ref is counting and all he does is restart the count? or allowing him to continue beating the opponent when the latter is already unconscious? It makes you wonder why do they bother paying a ref at all.

Tommy almost instantly becomes friends with Lincoln (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and Romano (Jon Seda), and an enemy of the gang leader Shortcut, all of them participating in the illegal fights. The gangs look more from the era of the movie 'Gangs of New York' when nobody had a gun instead of 1992.

Romano is one of the most likable characters but if you have watched enough action movies, a friend of the protagonists that is not a main character is most likely to get killed giving them one more reason to fight.
