For a ninja such as myself, the benefit of being able to practice my violin while on infiltration missions has been immensely helpful. The thrill of being able to practice the Song of Storms on my violin shortly before engaging in a battle to the death with another ninja has brought much joy to my days.
Since resonant sounds travel father than flat ones, because you're taking away the resonant power, you're effectively cutting the volume down, though scientifically speaking it's a little more complicated than that.
On a very positive side note, I found it actually has improved my tone!
I'm new to violin, and wouldn't always play with a nice, full, resonant tone because of how loud it would be. But when I put the mute on, I stopped caring about it as much since it was quieter. I played with longer bow strokes, and despite sounding "plugged," the evenness of my sound mellowed out and I found that I could play louder and fuller when I took the mute off. Which was a shock. I never knew I could play like that. Though this was more of a mental block than anything, the mute allowed me a way to improve my sound without holding back on technique out of fear of annoying the people around me.
I definitely recommend you get this!
Some notes - I bought one of the heavy mutes too - coated metal. This one works just as well, is much lighter in case it falls off would cause less damage to the floor or things around you (your toes), and mutes nicely. The heavy mute available on amazon too is more expensive, and does produce a bit richer sound. But this one does the job!
Super easy on and off. Lightweight. Inexpensive. Highly recommended.
I tested this mute by measuring sound levels at about 24" or less from the intstrument and by playing the same tunes with and without the mute. Sound meter was set on a music stand at the distance I usually use it.
Without the mute the loudest tone I could get from my violin was 79 decibels (db) which is the sound level of a busy street or an alarm clock.
With the mute installed the sound level dropped to about 68 db, the sound level of "normal" conversation.
Using the mute produces a sound that sounds as though it is coming from an enclosed box with the hint of echo, which is exactly where the sound comes from the violin - inside then out the F holes.
This mute works. It is not intended to silence the instrument to a soft whisper that cannot be heard a foot away. It is designed to significantly reduce the sound level, not silence it. Eight to ten decibals is a significant reduction.
...until it does. Because this thing stinks. Literally. It smells like it was carved of rubber from the sole of your local gas station attendant's shoe. I should have read the other reviews before buying.
Another reason to pay attention to reviews would have been to avoid the black smudge that this POS left on the violin bridge. Cheap rubber.
As to its effectiveness, it reduced the volume of the violin from an 11 to about an 8. Not as much as expected.
I'm not a complainer, and I leave plenty of good reviews for worthy products. This isn't one. This thing is cheap in every respect of the word. It's bad for your violin, probably bad for your health, and a waste of $5.99.
