Editorial Reviews

On their fourth album Toronto s Fucked Up pare things back to a single LP. In contrast to the sprawling epic of their last album, the punk rock opera David Comes To Life, the 2014 album returns to rock n roll basics, verse-chorus-verse-chorus. It also features guitar solos, mellotron and piano. Recorded for the first time in analogue, with Bill Skibbe (The Dead Weather, The Kills, Lower Dens, Andre Williams), the album is bathed in a warm, almost romantic glow. In particular, Jonah Falco s virtuosic drumming shines forth, each snare hit shattering the air. Damian Abraham s throaty growl is not less punk, but the overall effect is a more human, relatable Fucked Up. While the imagery still includes the usual high concept references (not least to classical mythology), Abraham and Mike Haliechuk s lyrics mostly address the puzzle of being in a punk rock band while having children and being in their early 30s. "So this is what it d be like? Everything bathed in a harsh bright light? Why is the impact so immense? Maybe I know it could have been me instead. "

Of the records of this group that I own, I like this as much as their other classic, HIDDEN WORLD. I could never really get into THE CHEMISTRY OF MODERN LIFE, so don't ask me about this one. And DAVID COMES TO LIFE is good too. Similar to DAVID COMES TO LIFE, this is quite a hard record with a sort-of "wall of sound" kind of sound. But, the songs seem tighter than DAVID COMES TO LIFE, and they stand on their own, individually. "Sun Glass" is quite good, and I really like the lyrics of "Glass Boys."

The only thing better than this record is seeing the group live! What a treat.

And yes, in a hardcore record review I called the concert "a treat." I'm not proud.

this is a hard hitting follow up to David comes to life.
on first listen it's not as melodic and accessible as David but it
comes around on repeated listens.
the vocals can be intimidating at first,it takes some conditioning for sure.

I would get DCTL before Glass Boys to ease into F'd Up's world.
But this album stands well on it's own.
I think the band did right in putting out a straight forward album like this
after the excess of an 80 minute punk opera.
Hardcore is alive and well and apparently lives in Canada.

The key to enjoying "Glass Boys" is NOT to compare it to "David Comes to Life" (F***ed Up's masterpiece and one of the best albums of the 2000s, in any genre) and just take it on its own terms. It's brilliant in its own right. The title track, in particular, is absolutely epic, while track 7 is the only weak one. Highly recommended for fans of metallish punk, punkish metal ... or just great rock music!

I guess not being on the cover of Spin can reduce your reach, huh? With that being said, no, this is not David Comes to Life. It is a slimmer collection of songs that still retains that progressive hardcore (snarled vocals, swirling guitars) and adds some extra drum tracks to give it an almost psychedelic (I really can't find a suitable word here) feel. An album that seems to ruminate on the themes of getting older i.e. growing up, I find it just as enjoyable as any of FU's more commercially acclaimed releases.
