5.0 out of 5 stars The fairy godmother of taboo waves her wand for a final bit of magic
By The Romantic Rush Blog on April 19, 2021
Once upon a time, there was a sassy princess and a naughty prince that enchanted all the readers in the land. The prince does naughty things to the princess, scandalizes the kingdom, and battles the most unexpected of foes- and in the hopes that they will live happily ever after.

Oh my, what a satisfying finale! From the first riveting chapter of this trilogy, I have been completely consumed by this story. This creative and inspired modern day Cinderella story whisked me away to another world, and quite frankly, I never want to leave it. With the wave of her wand, K Webster has updated the the sugary sweet and endlessly optimistic original story and warps it into a salacious and erotic sensation- it’s a lot more naughty, way more angsty, but still, in the end, beautiful optimistic. This is my kind of fairy tale- and I genuinely don’t think another fairy tale retelling will ever live up to this fantastic series. Disney might be aghast- but the fairy godmother of taboo has worked her magic to create a true shop shopping belle of the ball. Bibbity-bobbity- TABOO.

This story has been working up to the climatic final showdown we’ve all been anticipating- and while there are elements of this that have been predictable since book one, it doesn’t take away from the magic of how it all plays out. Suspenseful, naughty, and deliciously entertaining to the last page. While book one and some elements of book 2 played off the original a bit more, in a loosely adaptive but highly inventive reconceptualization, we still have some charming familiar content in the finale, but ultimately K Webster running free is just as fantastic.

Prince Charming has always been a droll and boring hero- but Winston Constantine has made him look even more insignificant. The powerful alpha-hole with his particular kinks stole my heart from book 1, and we saw this ruthless villain slowly start to build some feelings for his young Cinderelliot. This is a man who prides himself on control, and K Webster has slowly been playing up to the dissolution of that notion- when he can no longer control his feelings, or his heart. Of course, here we see him hurt and vengeful - he’s only just embraced his emotions and now he feels betrayed. And watching him come to terms with his heart is both sexy and swoony- the anti-hero becomes the hero- only he’s still super naughty and alphahole.

But the true character revelation in this story is our little modern day Cinderella- this series has always been about her coming to terms with her power. We’ve watched her go from the sassy, willingly manipulated to the bruised and battered stepsister to now the glorious princess in full possession of all her power. She’s been a victim of the machinations of powerful and conniving men and women- but now she’s fighting back. And most importantly- she’s fighting for her man. And I LOVED watching her come into herself- her confidence, the games, the ways in which she leaned into her emotions and her wit. She finally is able to go head to head with so many of those who have manipulated or hurt- but most importantly, she’s now a match for Winston. She gets him in a way that others don’t- accepts him, and she REFUSES to let him go. I loved her resilience, the fight she has in this story. This is a heroine truly realized- and I love her.

We have all the kinky fun and the twists and turns we’ve come to expect from this series- but we also have some ample swoon and lots of emotional range. It’s a bit lighter- in part due to the emotional connection we’ve found between these two and in part because we have a lot more action, and it moves at a pretty rapid pace. We get a lot of Constantine fun, and we get to take on the enemies. I wish we got to revel in the denouement a bit more (one of the enemy take-downs I was most excited about happens off page, a bit disappointing), but the epilogues made up for it. And, all in all, I love this series so much, it didn’t hinder me much to miss out on that desired take down.

This series represents everything I love about K Webster- truly some of her best work. Entertaining, addictive, and DEFIANTLY titillating. And that is what I love so much about K Webster’s point of view. She’s not provocative just because- she’s provocative because she wants to push our boundaries, normalizing the taboo, the “abnormal”. But she always does it with such heart- with an emotional resonance and romantic depth that deepens and enriches the taboo. She makes you question your own inhibitions, because when you infuse something salacious and naughty with something meaningful and poignant, you’re forced to think outside of your own boxes. And isn't that exactly what erotic fantasy should do? It’s not only delicious fun, but intellectually fascinating - and why I keep coming back to her stories over and over again.

I’m so sad this series is over- I have RELISHED it. But alas, the stroke of midnight has arrived, the ball is over, and our Cinderelliot gets to go home in the pumpkin to her prince at long last…..but we’ll always have this little bit of magic.
