OK, this isn't a "spice" review per se, but these bottles are so nice and plain and useful they can be used for a lot of other things.
About the "bottles that made it" part... I ordered 2 boxes of 6, and each box had one jar that was completely shattered. I mean pulverized glass was all over the inside of the larger box my order came in. They need to be packaged better. I have put in a request to return the broken ones and get a refund but I am not sure how to return glass shards or whether it's even legal to knowingly ship something like that... I think I will just send them a picture because i would hate for someone to open the box and get cut (I didn't because I heard the tinkling sounds and put on gardening gloves). I know that kind of thing happens, I will just hope for a refund for the 2 broken ones and try again.
The bottles themselves are very nice. They're an ideal size (slightly under 4 inches tall). The mouth opening is large enough to accommodate my largest measuring spoon (the Tablespoon). The shaker cap insert has large enough holes for most spices; but are not quite large enough for some things such as dried hot pepper flakes. However, unlike some well-known spice brand bottles, the snap-on shaker cap pops off very easily -- no need to pry with a knife or break a fingernail.
I was so pleased initially with the bottles that I was planning to buy many more; but I've become less impressed with them because of their lids. One lid was already broken in one of the sets when it first arrived, which should have been my first clue about the quality of the plastic lids. Unfortunately, the lids don't seem to be of the same durable quality that the glass bottles are. A second lid that got dropped accidentally on our slate floor developed a small crack.
I'm still using them for things like black truffle sea salt, various other smoked salts, and a few other specialty herb blends. Until I find a source for better lids, though; I'm not planning to buy any more of these spice jars.
These glass bottles have no labels included, so you will need to provide your own. They are three-ounce in size and measure 3.5 inches in height by 1.75 inches in diameter. They will fit inside most spice racks.
I really like that these bottles have white lids rather than black, and they have a shaker closure with convenient, medium-sized holes.
I have not had any problems with the sturdiness of either the shaker covers or the lids.
I like the set of six that I purchases so much, I plan to buy more.
- The white lids make them easy to label (with a thin sharpie). I can now clearly see the name of all my spices without moving them around in my spice cabinet.
- The glass jar is beautiful
- I was able to fit a damask spoon in the opening
- The lids are made of flimsy plastic. I have been using these about 5 months and I already have 2 broken lids
- The holes are too small for some of my spices. I had to grind up most of my spices in order for them to sift out of these containers.
