I'm one of those people who either loves what Madonna is doing, or outright hates it. I can't think of many Madonna songs where I was indifferent. I was concerned that they'd pick some songs that I just didn't like. But, as has been the case MANY times with Glee, they did manage to turn some songs I didn't care for into solid gold gems. Because, obviously, some of the songs that were selected just weren't my favorites. I never, at ALL, cared for Like A Virgin or What It Feels Like For A Girl. They just didn't resonate for me. But put the Glee cast on the case, and suddenly I loved them. So, let's get to the reviewing...
1). A+ - Lea Michele (Rachel Berry), Amber Riley (Mercedes), Naya Rivera (Santana), Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina) - Express Yourself - This has ALWAYS been one of my favorite Madonna songs. And the Glee girls KILLED it. They didn't just earn my respect, they TOOK it. Awesome job, and Lea and Amber just slayed their belt notes.
2). A+ - Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) and Cory Monteith (Finn) - Borderline/Open Your Heart - Two more of my favorite Madonna songs, made all the more awesome for being mashed up together! Just WOW! And during the show performance, how cute were Lea and Cory? LOL
3). A - Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester) - Jane Lynch gives a positively delicious performance of Madonna's famous #1 hit. You've got to check out the show performance, and the side by side of the two on YouTube. Jane and the Glee folks make an almost frame by frame recreation!
4). A - Lea Michele (Rachel Berry), Cory Monteith (Finn), Naya Rivera (Santana), Matthew Morrison (Mr. Shue), Jonathan Groff (Jesse), and Jayma Mays (Emma) - Like A Virgin - There is one big similarity here... Like A Virgin was the big break for Madonna... And this version of that song was the very first time we got to hear the awesomeness that is Naya Rivera. Oh, and the other similarity? Both versions ROCK!
5). A - Amber Riley (Mercedes) and Chris Colfer (Kurt) - 4 Minutes - This had never really been my favorite Madonna songs. It was good, but just not my thing. But in this setting, it really does SOUND like a song that would be used for a Cheerleading event. And Amber and Kurt KILLED this number. (As if they don't kill EVERY number...)
6). A- - Cory Monteith (Finn), Kevin McHale (Artie), Chris Colfer (Kurt), Mark Salling (Puck) - What It Feels Like For A Girl - One of my least favorite Madonna songs, vocally, although I've always loved the message. But the Glee guys give it a great spin, and a real look at the underlying sexism that is RAMPANT in schools today.
7). A+ - Lea Michele (Rachel Berry), Amber Riley (Mercedes), Cory Monteith (Finn), Chris Colfer (Kurt), and Glee Cast - Like A Prayer - Not just one of the very best songs on the album, but also one of the best of the entire series. The Power of Madonna, and the power of Diva caliber vocals. Truly an amazing performance.
Okay, so there you have it folks. My two cents about this Glee masterpiece. I give the whole album an overall A+ grade, and urge anyone who hasn't heard all of it yet to either buy it, or download the songs from iTunes or here. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Thanks for your time folks.
Sincerely, R.A. McDowell

I really loved the Madonna episode of `Glee'. Much like the Brittany Spears episode of this season, the Madonna episode was kind of epic. The look and feel of the episode was fun, fresh and captured a modernized variation of Madonna without ever making light of her contribution to music (and its long lasting relevance).
Sadly, the music doesn't stand alone as strongly as it does when accompanied by the show itself.
Take for instance the Jane Lynch cover of `Vogue'. The music video recreation that the show brought to the table was instant iconic television, but when separated from the video the song becomes a copycat cover. In fact, the only think that differentiates it from Madonna's original is Lynch's take on the ending monologue ("Will Schuester, I hate you"). The problem with this cover and songs like `Express Yourself' is that without any real variation to make it updated it feels like karaoke. Sure, one could argue that `Glee' really is nothing but glorified karaoke, but for the most part they texture their offerings in a way that don't feel that `cheap'. `Like a Virgin' feels effectively theatrical, but I can't help but compare it to the brilliant version performed in `Moulin Rouge!' and I can only wish that the same playful spontaneity was used in this version.
It pales in comparison.
The guys take on `What It Feels Like For A Girl' is not bad, but it just doesn't really feel right outside of the context of the show. When it was performed on the show it made sense and the visual presentation (complete with close ups of the girls faces as the boys serenaded) helped that along, but on the album it feels a bit awkward, despite the fact that vocally it is sincere.
I love Chris Colfer, but he just doesn't work on `4 Minutes', at all.
There are two saving graces here. One is `Like A Prayer', which capitalizes on the harmonized voices of the club and uses each member beautifully. There is a choir-like beauty to the verse structure (the background humming is stunning) and the fun quality of the chorus is rapturous in affection. It is a beautiful homage to Madonna while maintaining the spunk and charm of the show itself. For me though, the best track here is the mashup. I know, that seems odd to say, but the way that they mold `Borderline' into `Open Your Heart' is brilliant, and Michele and Monteith compliment one another effortlessly here, and the song plays to both of their strengths. Their bittersweet romance is given full life in the song.
I know that I'm only giving this album a C, but I still recommend it. I have all the albums released from the show and I listen to them continually. They are fun and really bring to minds eye the charm of the show!

The performers of Glee are second to none. They shine, week after week with excellent vocals, choreography and loads of charm. The latest one, The Power of Madonna realy shines. Creator Ryan Murphy has set it up well having Sue force the principal to play Madge's songs throughout the school all day which helps to make the breaking out in Madonna songs more believable. This CD contains all the performances from that episode and is SO good I long for more when its over. If you missed the episode or can't be near a video screen, this should satisfy. This cast could record an hour long Madonna tribute CD and never be boring or corny. Lea Michele is my favorite due to her wide range which helps to sell all her solos. She shines brightest on Like a Prayer. Chris Colfer usually seems to sing only high soprano but on 4 Minutes we get to hear his wider range. And he sings as strong as belter Amber Riley. As funny as Jane Lynch was in the recreation of the Vogue music video, her vocals are definitely good enough to warrant a listen. She holds her own alongside the New Directions cast. Also love hearing Matthew Morrison and Jayma Mays on Like a Virgin. Though he's the stronger vocal they work as well vocally as they do at acting together. Cory Monteith gets better and better but Jonathan Groff makes a welcome addition to the cast. Now there's a male lead as vocally strong as Lea. Could add more variety for those tired of Lea always singing lead....
In short if you love the previous Glee soundtracks, you'll love this one. Now hopefully Ryan Murphy will wait for at least an hours worth of material before releasing the next.

A great tribute to madonna
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on October 4, 2011
Madonna is an icon, the lady has sold over 300+ million records and is recognised by them that know has the biggest selling and greatest female perfomer of them all. So why wouldnt glee cover her songs and pay their tribute to her?
So thats what they have done and hit number 1 in the usa in the process. These tracks are select cuts from the madonna glee episode and while fun and catchy they will never capture the greatness of the originals. however its still a great effort and worth a look. Fans of glee will love it and madonnas back calalogue opens up to a new generation.
