If you enjoy Russian music in the style of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky Korsakov, then there is a very good chance you will enjoy the music of Gliere. Even though he was around until 1956, he didn't follow the same path as Shostakovich or his famous pupil Prokofiev, choosing instead to follow the earlier Russian masters (and keep in step with the rather conservative Soviet Party tastes of the time!) However, don't let that turn you off. This is muscular, wonderful music that makes you feel like he had something to say and wasn't waisting our time in saying it. The BBC Phil whith Edward Downes bring all this to the fore in an exciting performace that you cannot help but enjoy. I was a little disappointed in the symphonies in their Naxos recordings but these performances are fabulous. Well worth the money spent.
