I decided on this book as my kindle first selection for March. I've not read any previous books by this author and had no pre formed opinion on any world within the book or writing style.
This book follows Layla, a college girl who's mom is dead and who's dad is a notorious serial killer. Sounds like a weird life, right? Well, it gets a lot weirder. Some beings are after her in an effort to use her dad. She doesn't know her dad is of the supernatural variety. The only thing she really knows is that he trained her to fight, he killed a ton of people, and she's one of 3 people who knows how to contact him.
She learns a lot in the aftermath of her kidnapping. People that she trusted have been lying to her and spying on her. Monsters exist. She's actually of the supernatural variety as well. She must learn to control her own demons.
There's a lot of action, creatures, and some introspective whining sessions(which to be fair I would probably have a lot more than she did). The characters are pretty cool overall. Lots of different types of creatures, most of which aren't the typical creatures you see in these types of books(ie vampires, fairies, etc). The setting is in England, but its not really explored really in depth. Just a few general mentions of the university, country, some cities, etc. The language as well alludes to a British person.
As for grammar, editing, etc, I only noticed one error throughout the entire book. It was when describing a male adolescent, it said made adolescent. Not a huge deal, but I did happen to notice it. Nothing else caught my eye. A few phrases were awkward to me, but in reading them back I realized that was just the more British way of speaking perhaps. It wasn't wrong, just not how we speak where I am from so it made me notice it.
Would I read the follow up book? Sure. I liked Layla. I thought the book had an interesting variety of characters within it. I'd like to see where it's going as a series. Overall a well done start to a series.
