Author Nicola McDonagh has a way of putting the reader in the moment with vivid imagery and her book 'Glimmer and Other Stories' is a wonderful example of her ability to do just that. Her writing is, quite simply, beautiful.
That said, I should add at this point that I don't believe this is a book for every reader. I say that because these are, by the author's own admission, "strange" stories. Strange in the sense that they are, at least some of them, verging on surreal. Strange, also, in the sense that unlike many writers, McDonagh doesn't tie all her stories together with a neat bow so that the reader can sigh after finishing one and say "ah, what a nice ending." Instead, she often leaves the reader with a puzzled frown wondering just what happens next. For many readers, especially those who like to be spoon fed sugar-coated stories by television producers, this can be unsettling. However, if you are a reader who enjoys the opportunity to interact with a story, one who likes a bit of mystery and a challenge to your intellect, McDonagh has given you a book that is not only interesting but also intriguing.
In short, this is a book for those who derive pleasure from reading a series of words strung together beautifully; with great skill and great imagination.
If you are one of those people, I'd say buy this book and enjoy it.
I certainly did.
"Glimmer" is a terrific read if you appreciate the tantalizing taste of mystical imagery. All seven stories were immediately engaging and full of intrigue, with a common thread of surrealism woven through. Every story took me on a different metaphorical journey into another realm of being.
If you appreciate literary writing, you will love the way Nicola so cleverly uses many and varied language techniques, but her style is not for everyone.
A great book - definitely if you value quality writing and appreciate the unusual.
