Editorial Reviews

Review

Starred Review, Library Journal
"Think Savile Row meets Jersey Shore. Hall's debut novel captures the roller-coaster ride of bipolar disorder through Ash, a man not always easy to like but one readers can understand. [...] In addition, Darian's character is a joy, with his simple albeit humorously shallow outlook on life. By turns laugh-out-loud funny and tragically sad, Hall's novel draws readers into this wonderful glitter-ball of a world. Highly recommended.
--Melanie C. Duncan, Shurling Lib., Macon, GA

"Brilliantly written, dangerously good, immensely satisfying. My favorite romance of the year--and it's entirely possible that it will shake down to be my favorite romance of this decade.  I laughed, I cried, and I got lost in the gorgeous, delicious writing of this debut author. If you love romantic dramadies, you should read this book. If you love romance novels, you should read this book. If you love good books with realistic, memorable characters, you should read this book"
--Suzanne Brockmann, New York Times bestselling author

"Simply the best writer I've come across in years."
--Laura Kinsale, New York Times bestselling author

"Honest, intense, and swoonily romantic, GLITTERLAND is a sparkling debut."
Ruthie Knox, USA Today bestselling author

"Devastatingly beautiful. [...] There are books out there that simply pull you in and won't let go: Ash & Darian's book is like that. Biting humor even at the darkest moments, this book made me laugh out loud while sobbing. Beautiful, tragic, damaged...it's an amazing love story."
--Jessica Scott, USA Today bestselling author

Right. I'm going to come right and say this and everyone be damned. I am an Essex girl. Well, an Essex woman actually. So put down the pitchforks, and the flaming torches and stop chasing the monster back into the spray tan booth :)
I do not own a pair of white stilettos, I am pale skinned, am not promiscuous (except in my books with my characters) and I don't believe I'm vulgar (except again in my books. I've never used the F word so much as when my guys are talking or in bed)

So when the chance arose to read this book which is about a young, Essex boy Glitterati model called Darian and a rather needy, clinically depressed yet endearingly sexy and clever Ash, I jumped at it. And disappointed I was not. This is one amazing story. Combining the seriousness of depression and bi polar disorder with the banter and complete over the top fantabulousness (I'm a writer, I can make words up) of the superb character of Darian, I couldn't put this book down. I fell in love with them both. Yes, it took me a while to decipher what Darian was talking about but once I was in, I could almost hear my daughter's young gay friend James speaking the words. He's a bit Darian like himself.

The romance between these two completely mismatched man in everything but the fact that both have a penis, is a joy to watch as it unfolds and the preconceptions you have about the characters fly in the face of what you expect and go off at a tangent to prove people are indeed deeper that skin allows. Darian is an incredibly rich character and surprising in many ways. Ash is tougher than he looks, with a wit that had me sniggering and the two of them together are just incendiary.

Every now and then you find a new book and a new author and you know you've stumbled on something truly brilliant. This is one of those times.

The writing, for a debut author, is nothing less than amazing. Literate, funny, witty, painful at times, moving and real. The words are so expressive that they're almost poetry.

And the characters are beautifully etched - with great depth and affection. The main characters include a successful, but damaged, popular mystery author and a glitter-clothed club kid who works as a model. The author suffers bipolar disease and depression and spends his time hidden out in his London house, afraid to even go to the subway or the grocery store. The kid is absolutely beautiful, but an Essex kid (think Jersey Shore), far from the sophistication of the highly-educated, upper-class author.

And yet somehow, the kid sees the humanity behind the facade of this damaged man, and brings it out with humor, lightness and surprising wisdom.

Without realizing it, the kid is giving the author back his life, along with his love and passion, with neither strings nor claims. And perhaps that is the crux of the whole problem - the author's need to destroy whatever makes him feel happiness or joy, before it is taken away from him - by his mental illness, his self-destruction or just the evils of fate.

Yet somehow, they do end up together. The kid is played up as being "not too bright" but, though uneducated, he's certainly insightful and, more important, honest with his thoughts and feelings. He is a very good young man.

I'm certainly doing justice to neither the plot nor the characters. You'll just have to read the book to see how lovingly, eloquently and powerfully they're drawn.

I found this cover so striking, I liked the blurb and it's a debut author. It was a no brainer to try this one. Ash Winters is an author who is clinically depressed, bipolar and not quite sure he has the wits to live his life on a sane level. Once institutionalized, he now gets severe panic attacks and pretty much soaks up all of his friends patience.

At a party, Ash by chance meets Darian, a gay man from Essex. I'll let Ash describe him for you:

He was a ridiculous creature, A vulgar, glittering pirate of a man, all jewellery and fake tan, gold glinting in his ears, on his fingers and round his wrists. His dark hair gleamed with product and had been painstakingly teased into a quiff that defied taste, reason, and gravity. And I couldn't stop looking at him. /quote

Darian isn't really Ash's type, but Ash can't help but be intrigued by him. In a moment of spontaneity, he decides to go home with him. He soon realizes Darian is what he needs - someone who has patience and doesn't try to fix him. He tries to play it off as just a sex buddy, but feelings definitely start to run deeper.

Oh this book. This book has such moments of beautiful prose that made my heart pitter-patter but it also had moments of being just plain boring. There is a lot of talking in this book and my eyes would start to glaze over once in awhile. I felt myself getting antsy to move the story along.

When these two first meet I really didn't think I would like them together. Darian is a model, somewhat crass, very eccentric, says what is on his mind, where Ash is much more on an introvert. They were just so different. But honestly by the end, it is a very convincing love story. Darian is so non-judgmental of Ash and his sickness.
