Editorial Reviews

Review

"A terrific place to start if one wants to get a sense of why globalization is attracting the attention of so many scholars, government officials and lay people." George Ritzer, University of Maryland, author of The McDonaldization of Society

"An authoritative and commodious collection, The Globalization Reader confronts an issue that now dominates social science discussion. Through an intelligent and judicious selection of key texts, Lechner and Boli explore the debates, explanations, experiences, and dimensions of the globalization process. The Reader covers the field systematically and expertly. Simply the best reader on globalization." Bryan S. Turner, University of Cambridge

"With this large, excellent selection of pieces written on globalization, we'll have something to recommend to our friends and students who want to know the best opinions on this most important of subjects. Many of the authors are critics from the left, others embrace globalization, and there is a good sprinkling of both official and unofficial views. It's a timely and well-done volume." Daniel Chirot, University of Washington

".the book deserves acknowledgement as a solid introduction, which maps out tthe major themes and issues that confront newcomers to the terrain." Progress in Development Studies

Review

"The new edition of The Globalization Reader is most impressive. It comprehensively covers the many dimensions of globalization, and incorporates the widest range of analytic and normative perspectives."
John W. Meyer, Professor of Sociology, emeritus, Stanford University

"Lechner and Boli have done it again. The fourth edition of their reader is even more impressive than the previous three editions. It is very carefully organized, comprehensive, up-to-date and even-handed. I recommend it very strongly indeed as the most pedagogically fruitful text in the vast field of global studies."
Roland Robertson, University of Pittsburgh and University of Aberdeen

"With many new features – the global financial crisis, the growth of Chinese world influence, global education, civil society, the globalization of justice, religious fundamentalism and much more - this fourth edition keeps The Globalization Reader at the forefront of the field. At once judicious and comprehensive in the selection of themes and issues, it provides essential tools for understanding the diverse dimensions of the global scene."
Bryan S. Turner, Presidential Professor of Sociology, The Graduate Center, The City University of New York

I had to purchase this book for a globalization issues of the twentieth century class, and this selection of articles was just okay. Many of the subjects discussed seem a bit outdated, so the relevance to the state of globalization in the twenty first century is missing. However, many of the articles are interesting, and the articles display a range of views and opinions on globalization.

It was for a graduate class and after completing the course I did come away with the different views of globalization from multiple scholars (which served one of the course purpose).

This book was interesting and touched on my different topics in different ways however I found the chapters were a bit superficial as they tried to cram lots of different content into the book. I enjoyed some of it but not all of it, however I have not read the book cover to cover. It is a good book for a student to have but one should not lean too heavily on it for information.
