Details: This just works. You link your G3 to a GlocalMe account, deposit money and use it to buy a data package valid for the country you're traveling to. Then you just boot up the device. It finds and connects to a local cell network and creates a password-protected WiFi hot spot you can log into with your phone, tablet, laptop, etc. You're good to go.
The G3 is my second GlocalMe; I bought it via an upgrade offer to replace a G1S, and this model fixes every significant issue with the first-generation version. In particular, the battery no longer overheats and its life has doubled, the interface is totally redone to be user-friendly, and it only sips your data package (more on that below). The G3 connects to 4G networks where they exist, and GlocalMe has come out with a wide variety of single-country and regional data packages that can cut airtime costs by 50% or more over the worldwide package. To me, owning a GlocalMe is now a no-brainer for anyone who wants to stay connected at a reasonable cost during foreign travel. I've used the G3 in three European countries, with no major problems.
The first time you boot it up in a country, it takes a couple of minutes to connect to the local network; subsequent boots in that country take under a minute. It's important to realize that the G3 depends on connecting to a local cellular network in every country, so it only gives 4G speeds where GlocalMe's in-country partner network supports them.
Data usage: Some of the reviews mentioning data usage can be misleading, because you don't know how the reviewers are using their data. We kept two phones constantly connected while we were awake, occasionally added a tablet, and 1 GB of data lasted about a week. But to save data (and money), we tweaked the phone and tablet settings not to do automatic app updates or constant email syncing, and kept our background apps and automatic notifications to the minimum necessary. Streaming burns lots of data; we didn't do any. And Google Maps is also a data hog, so I closed it whenever it wasn't in active use. By way of contrast, a friend whose phone wasn't tweaked connected to our G3 and ran through 500MB of data in less than a day. How much data you use is pretty much up to you.
A couple of minor glitches, but none worth dinging a star:
(1) Twice during our trip, the screen interface defaulted to the (apparently native) Chinese language for no discernible reason. By following the icons (More / Language) I restored it to English.
(2) The G3 lost connection to the local cellular networks a couple of times, but just notified with a message box on its screen. I only noticed the lost connection when I tried and failed to be able to use a connected device, which was still showing a wi-fi connection. Both times, a G3 reboot quickly reconnected to the cell network.
Finally, two improvements that are still needed:
(1) You should be able to select which data package to use. Currently, you must burn through data packages in the order you buy them, which can waste a lot of money. If you have a worldwide 1GB data package (Cost: 30 Euros) and go to Germany for a week, you can't buy and use a single-country German package (Cost: 7 Euros) until you've used up the worldwide package. That doesn't make sense.
(2) The G3 should notify you (preferably via its phone app) when a data package runs low, so you can buy a new one without having to regularly check its screen for the amount of remaining data.
The previous model got four stars; it worked, but had several problems and idiosyncrasies. This one just works, and works well.
The device unit did come with 1GB Global Initial Data and that was great. However, after putting the unit in a bag, it turned on. It is very easy to turn on and my 1gb was consumed (at home) in one day. The power button need to be below flush and use a two step process.
I bought a T-moble data only sim card for use in the USA - worked great.. (had to go to 3 T-Mobil locations because this is not a common thing sold in the USA and the store personnel we poorly educated on it). The device does tell you how much data you have remaining but it only updates every 5-20 minutes. so, if you are using a lot of data (i.e. forgot to turn off auto updates on apps or podcast player) you may not see that you have a problem until you have used a lot of data. Because of this (and the cost) I did not activate the "pay-as-you-go" option. The cost is 0.05 Euro per MB or $50 Euro for 1GB.
NOTE: Your phone and/or computer will see this as a wi-fi connection (because it is). So, your Phone or computer will think you are on free data and start doing updates. Be careful with this. I suggest turning the GlocalMe off when not in use. Also, be very careful with the power button.
I took the device to Poland and bought a local SIM card. It Worked right away and for the whole time I was in Poland. FYI data SIM in Poland is REALLY cheep.
2nd country was Czech Republic. I wanted to buy data for the on board (virtual) SIM. I did not want to find a store and hoped this would save me time. Their cost for data seemed fair given the (theoretical) convenience. I could not find a way to do this from the device. I had to hook my PC up to the hotel wi-fi and go to the GlocalME web site. The reason I bought the unit was to avoid using unsecured Wi-Fi. The website is poorly organized and the payment system is flawed. It took me almost 1 hour to buy data for the Czech Republic. The system was very consing and kept quoting me costs in different currencies. Linking to paypal was difficult to use. After I bought the data, It worked great!
NOTE: If you buy data for ONLY one country it is useless when you cross the boarder. You can't even use it at a more expensive rate. Not necessarily a problem but, good to know.
3rd Country was Austria. Knowing that I would go to Italy in a few day, I did not want to spend another hour to buy data in both countries. so, I used the top up function to add money to my GlocalMe account. Again, I had to use my PC on the Hotel Wi-Fi to do this. Again this took a lot of time to work through. The website now insisted that I set my local country. I tried to set the USA but it said that country was not available. Somehow I eventually worked around this problem and tried to top up my account. The website would not let me pay in USD so I paid in Euro but when I was sent to paypal in showed up in Yen (I think). Again after and hour of work I had added money to my account and bought a small data package for Austria. Again, the device worked very well.
4th country was Italy. When we got to our hotel, I was able to log on via GlocalMe and buy data for Italy. However, found money missing from my GlocalMe account. I did not know why. I contacted GlocalMe via chat. They told me that converting money from Euros to Dollars had a fee. My account now showed funds dollars even though I used euros to "top up" a few days before. The loss was 40%???. After spending 45 minutes on the problem they changed their answer. They now claimed that I selected the "Pay-as-you-go" function. I DID NOT. It appears that the device turned on again in my bag and I was pulling data at the highest rate after I crossed the boarder into Italy. I argued, "why would I buy data in each country and use "Pay-as-you-go" "? They were not sympathetic. They also told me that they could not turn off "Pay-as-you-go" only I could. I did not turn it on so, I don't know how to fix this. Very frustrating. So, my solution for now is to not use the top up function because, I can't control the use of my money. This takes away some of the advantage of this device. Data speeds in Italy were good and the device worked well.
We could connect to Wifi in every country. It was invaluable for getting GPS driving (and walking) instructions, working with email, staying in touch with work, and posting updates for our family to see our trip. The device seemed to be able to easily get through 8 hours of fairly continuous usage, and the backup battery was helpful for keeping my phone charged. Both of our phones allowed texting and phone calls over Wifi - so we were able to use our phones without incurring roaming fees.
Highly recommended for international trips.
Here are some other things to know:
* Your phone can gobble up data fast. Over 20 days, I ended up using a total of 4GB of data (and that's only because I started to conserve much better after the first week). Even then, we easily went through 100MB every hour that we had it on during the final few days. Familiarize yourself with your phones settings to conserve data before using the device, and power it off when not in use.
* This seems to tap into local 3G/4G networks to pick up an internet connection. So it is subject to the same signal availability as a phone. We encountered many dead spots during our trip. But we did find that, when on a river cruise for 7 days, this device provided more reliable and faster Wifi than the boat did.
Top reviews from other countries

WiFi broadcast strength is extremely poor. I bought this device to use for internet access on oilfield locations, where accommodations are typically small metal walled shacks. The wifi signal produced by this device is the weakest of any device I've used, often being unable to penetrate a door or wall.
By comparison, I can put an HP250/252 mobile printer, iphone, laptop, Huawei E8372 not just outside, but in a completely separate shack 20-50 ft away and connect to it them with any device, without a good signal. The Glocalme G3 can be found by my laptop with an intermittent connection, and my iphone cannot pick it up, if the Glocalme is just outside the door or even on the roof, less than 6' from the devices.
Cellular Signal Strength:
Below average for a hotspot. Unfortunately this particular device has no external antenna ports (TS9, etc), so in areas of weak coverage, the device will not pick up a signal, even if your phone can manage a usable connection to the same network. The lack of antenna connection is just bizarre for a product of this purpose and price.
App and Device Interface:
The device GUI leaves a lot to be desired. In Vsim mode there isn't any ability to set 2G/3G/4G or choose/view available networks. You just need to hope that it connects to usable connection. In Amsterdam airport, this worked fine, however in Saudi Arabia so far it seems to choose a network with poor connectivity, when my iphone 6 can choose any of the three networks with better results.
Furthermore in local sim mode, all you can really do is choose APN and 2G/3G or 2G/3G/4G. That's about as complex a preference you can access.
The App itself is exceptionally poor. You can use it to purchase data, and that's about it. No ability to change any settings on the GlocalMe, which is a major let down. Often with a poor connection you may want to try moving the device to different areas to improve connectivity to a cellular network. However signal strength isn't even accessible on the app. You also cannot toggle which SIM to use other than physically on the device.
The interface itself is poor. For instance "Data Connection" title for a toggle button is also link to a data connection configuration pane, where you can select your APN and network type. However this link is in the same font, and position as all other parameters being displayed so, it isn't at all intuitive to click on or attempt to access. A very frustratingly and poorly executed App overall.
Thoughts:
Just about any mainstream wifi hotspot will perform better than this device, and give you more configuration options, and most importantly a usable wifi connection to the device. I have a very inexpensive and old E8372 that is a far better performer, and they run well under $50 USD to purchase and also have TS9 antenna ports for areas of poor signal strength. Moving up from there an E5577 is twice the product for half the price.
That said, for the VSIM side of things, I would still recommend this product over the round orange competitor. The data bundles are easy to purchase and have a good variety. It's a very convenient feature, and is the only reason this device receives 3 instead of 2 stars. Without the VSIM and data packages they're offering, this hotspot is not worth anyone's money.
In a city with extraordinary cellular coverage, this device may be more desirable, but don't expect to be able to wander far from it.

GOOD.
1) Way better than WIFI hotspots (like USELESS RIP OFF DOCCOMO). My “go -to” when i needed gps for directions eyc.
2) Works as advertised and reliable.
3) Long battery life, and can act as power pack
4) Easy to add more time.
LESS GOOD
1) A bit heavy (more nusance than huge problem).
2) Does not work “anywhere” and still needs cell towers, so it does NOT work at sea like on a cruiseship unless in port.
3) Freezes (albiet rarely). When it freezes you need to reset the device.
4) Had a bad habit if switching to another lanuguage (Korean for some reason). Did this several times a day! Never happened in Singaport or Toykyo. Most of this happened in Hong Kong for some reason, as their company is there! No problems eleswhere (Malaysis, Tokyo).

Since other users reported data drain, I disabled photos and videos backup/synch to the cloud. I had no issue with data drainage. I also have had no stalling/freezing or any UI issue that some have reported. May be they got a lemon. It is a little heavy. So, I found an old mobile phone case with a belt clip and wear it on my belt when I am moving around in the city.
This device is perfect for traveling to different countries with short stays where you dont want to bother with switch local sim cards frrquently and you have very light usage such as messaging, maps, and light browsing. If you are staying at one location for a week or longer, you would be better off getting a local sim card which will be significantly cheaper.

The other thing I've found is that when I hit my monthly data limit on my own plan at home, buying some Glocal data in Canada is cheaper than paying overage charges to my own carrier (Bell).
Battery life is great, stability is great (never had to reboot the thing). Very happy I bought it.
The only slight downside is the 5 user connection limit, so I occasionally had to kick the kids off it.
