Editorial Reviews

2014 release from the Christian Rock band. With over 1.7 million units in career sales, a RIAA Gold Certified album (Strong Tower), and a RIAA Gold Certified Longform Video (Live From Portland), Kutless continues their streak in making big impacts in the last several years. Kutless was also named the #7 Billboard Christian Artist of the Year, and It Is Well was the #10 Billboard Christian album of the Year. 2012's Believer continued the success Kutless found with It Is Well; Believer has scanned over 100k units since its release.

I've followed Kutless for nearly ten years now. I've enjoyed their music but in all honesty, it would be a stretch to say that I am numbered among one of their fans. Last year, that changed when I took my kids to a Kutless show. I was very impressed with four guys who were musically tight and professional. But more important, their hearts were revealed on the stage that night. It became evident that the gospel is the true driver of their lives as well as their music.

Their newest release, Glory has only increased my respect for these guys. The first word that popped into my mind as I listened to these new songs was this - VERTICAL. A few lyric samples will highlight the vertical dimensions of this terrific album:

In Jesus Name is filled with gospel-saturated themes that give listeners hope as they rest in Christ alone --

Son of righteousness, crucified, hanging on the cross, you paid the price to give us life -- In Jesus' name, our sins are washed away, In Jesus' name, we are rescued, we are saved. The love has come to make a way for us.

In Jesus' name, there is freedom for the broken, In Jesus' name, there is healing for the hopeless -- For all our days, we rest in Jesus name.

You Alone fixates the attention of worship on God in all his glory --

At the Cross, You stretched out your arms, Now You wear the scars, You wear the scars -- At Your Name, every knee will bow and every voice will shout, we will shout. There is no one like You, No one --

Great is the Lord, Ruler of all, You Alone, Conquered the Grave, You are the Way, You Alone, You Alone.

This album is presented as an act of worship to a holy God. It is filled with cross-saturated lyrics that magnify the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I initially wrote a review stating 3 stars for this album. However, after listening to it again, i feel it could be bumped up to five. I was being a little too harsh to this group. My initial disappointment was in the fact that this felt like another worship album in an already crowded arena. But this is what Kutless has proved they can own. Some songs like God Rest My Soul, Rest, You Alone, Revelation and especially In Jesus Name and In this City are crown jewels. They aren't quite the hard rock group they were 10 years ago...but I feel they have decided that their new role is to provide new uplifting songs for the church and some would certainly qualify here. Not so sure about We lift you up though...maybe too rocky for some. It really is like Believer only pretty much worship now. But if you can be okay with that...there is some good stuff here. Lyrically, this is probably some of their best song writing yet. I just hope that maybe they could go back to another Hearts of the Innocent, Sea of Faces or To Know You're Alive type album in the future. But even if they stay in worship music...I think they have definitely made their stamp on it. It joins on that front Strong Tower, It Is Well and okay for some critics Believer too. Each album nowadays has to be measured on its own merit and not compared to previous efforts and that is true here. Outstanding album? Maybe debatable. But to me a solid effort...maybe not epic but enough to certainly add to an impressive catalog of worship music out in Christian music.

This is a great CD, Kutless is simply Kutless, and they are great at what they do, this is more of a praise and worship album and is very well done, it reminds me of It Is Well and Strong Tower, but is more like Believer, just not as heavy as some of their stuff, but it is Kutless, and in my opinion they are genuine and great at what they do and if you love God and love singing along to songs about praising God, then this is for you, if not, then look elsewhere, because Kutless is Kutless and Kutless is a great Rock and Praise and Worship band and always will be.

I really wanted one song from this album. Usually Kutless mixes up the songs so it doesn't sound so every song doesn't sound the same. This album seems like all songs sound the same except the one I wanted, "Never To Late". If I had it to do over, I would probably just buy the MP3 of the one song.

This CD isn't bad, it's better than their last one, but I still miss the old Kutless that was good old rock and roll with God as their focus.

With "Glory", Kutless further reinforces their transition from an alternative rock band to a praise and worship band. Although they have crafted many excellent "rock" and "worship" songs over the past 12 years, they have written almost as many songs that are just average. Unfortunately with this release there are far more average songs than there are excellent ones and overall this is arguably their weakest release to date.

All of the songs all boast a big sound, but they also feel extremely uncreative. There are only two songs do not follow the same formula as the rest of the tracks. This makes the project feel completely familiar despite the fact that this is all new material.

Thematically the album hovers around the idea of lifting up God's name and praising him with our lips. While this is a noble effort, the effect they are trying to create is weakened because the lyrics seem recycled from countless other worship songs. It is also disappointing to hear the same lyrics repeated on their own album. For example, we hear "bless this city, in Jesus name" on "In The City" and also the lyrics "In Jesus Name" repeated in a similar way throughout the song "In Jesus Name".

On a more positive note, the lyrics do avoid being cliché and as with other Kutless releases they are theologically sound. The highlight of the album is "In The City" which has a quiet but epic sound which is done in the same vein as "Dying to Become" from their album "To Know You're Alive". With the closing notes, they leave us pondering this challenge: "may Your Church do more than sing". It's a powerful message and delivered flawlessly.

I can see this album taken three ways: 1) If you are not a Christian, you think the music is average, and the lyrics are hard to relate to.
