If you are a baseball fan this book is a must. But even if you are not and you just like listening to old geezers talk about the history they have lived through then buy this book. You can read other books about the Titanic, the Lusitania, World War I or other major events of a hundred years ago but while those events were unfolding the majority of the everyday Joes were following the great American pastime. In "The Glory of Their Times", Ritter lets the men themselves tell you who they knew, who they liked and what playing major league baseball meant to them. Ritter, in an impartial detached tape recorder way let's the men who played the game tell their story without any editorializing on his part. The beauty of this book is, almost to a man, those interviewed are positive and upbeat about not only their days in baseball but life in general. They look back on their youth and marvel at their good fortune to have been associated with a great sport and the great men who played it. Even if your not a baseball fan and don't know Cy Young from Babe Ruth, you can appreciate the uplifting nature of this book.

Greatest Baseball book I've ever read when the game was pure and just a game.

If you like baseball or history this will be a great read. Each chapter is told in the first person by the player. And some great tales they tell.

I had purchased "The Glory of their Times" for a friend. The book, by Lawrence Ritter, is one of the best baseball non-fiction works ever written, and our friend had never read it. I wanted to get him a copy without paying a lot for it, as this wasn't a birthday or Christmas gift -- just something we wanted him to see. The copy we received was in fine condition. Hard to tell it had ever been used.
