Now this album is all instrumental so don't expect to hear Kaki's voice but gosh, she can play guitar for sure. The mood on the majority of these tracks is very Westerny and if Sergio Leone was still around, he would have probably contacted her for the score of his next movie. I mean, you can see Lee Van Cliff and Clint Eastwood having an argument in the middle of the main street, ready to exchange some lead.
Great album... we need more of those! Keep'em coming Mrs. King.
Update on 10/25: Okay so I guess I went a bit overboard on my review here above. Not all tracks are westerny... some are more jazzy / easy listening and just as awesome... I guess I was so impressed with the "Cargo Cult" track with its snare and riding rhythm that I assumed the whole album was like that... so there, I stand happily corrected.
I love the option to download, too. I would take stars off for being limited to mp3 and not having a lossless option but it's free so I can't complain. I can't wait to listen to the real songs when the CD arrives.
Like Kaki's early albums, it's guitar focused and instrumental, but like her later albums it features lush production with backing instruments. The sounds are less percussive than her early albums, featuring a good mix of sweeping melodies, downbeat post-rock electric guitar, and some world music influences.
So...question for Kaki King fans: what other albums of hers would be most like Glow, or is this a new direction for her? Seeing the good reviews on all her albums, I just purchased Junior and I was stunned at how different it was from Glow - I wouldn't have recognized it as being created by the same artist. Any recommendations for similar Kaki King music would be appreciated, and I also I prefer instrumental, as opposed to music w/ lyrics.
