  • Inside The Box - 9-Pin FireWire 800 Cable, IEC Power CableFeatures
  • A cool drive is a healthy drive - The GTP50 uses a temperature-controlled fan making it overall quieter than our previous designs while still offering proper cooling. The case is designed with front-panel ventilation holes to draw cool air in, while exhausting warm air out the back - critical to the performance and reliability of the components.
  • Triple Interface - The GPT50 provides all the ports you'd possibly need. With FireWire 800, USB 2.0 and eSATA options, you can connect the GPT50 to your external interface of choice.
  • Nobody likes wall-warts - They are easily misplaced, or accidentally unplugged from the drive, and take up valuable outlet space. The GPT50 uses an industry-standard power cord and pro-quality internal power supply for the most efficient and reliable power source possible.
  • Keeping your data safe - The GPT50 boasts new features designed to keep your data safe. The intelligent power switch must be held for 3 seconds to power off the drive, guarding against unintended power-off. The multifunction LED shows drive power, activity, and also warns of a failing hard drive.

UPDATE 11/15/2014: This drive went dead on me around the first of this month, just about two and a half years after I got it out of the box and used it for the first time. It has business files on it, so it is not going into anyone else's hands. I may call the company to see what suggestions they may have for me to try fixing it myself. I have not yet done that. Thanks to my backup system having not failed me I have not lost much of anything, and for now everything is backed up again onto two brand new pocket-sized Western Digital 1Tb Elements USB 3.0 drives. They work with USB 2.0--a lot more slowly than eSTATA, but they work.

Two years and a half is a rather short life for a hard drive, I think, and to be honest I am disappointed. But we must of course recognize that the drive I got is only one sample.

I bought a Glyph Technology GT50 2 TB external drive one year ago this month, after having done considerable research on the available choices. This was recommended in a forum of serious video producers as something that holds up. They were talking about using it for video production and editing. My purchase was from 17th Street Photo via Amazon.

I use it mainly to hold full and incremental backup images from several computers that are under my care, including my own. These backups have been critically important to me a number of times over the years that I have been using this system. Things happen. I feel as secure with this drive as with any drive I have ever owned, in 24 years of computer ownership and heavy use.

I use both eSATA and USB 2.0 connections with different computers. Data transfer with the eSTATA connection is fast. Data transfer with the USB 2.

I have 4 of these drives and one of them has a distinctive and annoying fan noise, a "whine" at about 3.5 kHz - this is very annoying when working with audio. The others are quite enough, producing about 48 dB of fan noise when 2 are running.

I am a "fan" of Glyph drives - having used them continuously for over 6 years. They are for the most part reliable, but one can tell that quality control varies. One of my 500 gig drives died after only 3 years of use, a 250 gig I am still using has lasted 5 years.

A small drive with built in Fan and NO wall wart to deal with.
Portable drives without power take too long to copy large Video files.
This drive is well built and copies fast.
