A helpful resource for anyone researching Nisei (second-generation Japanese-American) contributions to our war effort in both Europe and the Pacific during World War II, with information hard to find elsewhere. The text does contain typographical errors, but few that obscure the meaning of the sentences in which they occur, and the author likes to front nouns referring to his Japanese-American soldiers or military-intelligence personnel with adjectives like "brave" and "intrepid" that context renders wholly unnecessary. The book's long final section features verbatim reproductions of the award citations won by Japanese-American soldiers or intelligence agents, for the Distinguished Service Cross, many of which were belatedly elevated to the Medal of Honor during the Clinton administration.

This is a gripping narrative of the patriotism and valor of Japanese Americans who served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Even though they faced discrimination at home, they strived to demonstrate to America and the world that they were just as loyal as any other Americans. In fact, many soldiers in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team actually volunteered for the Army from behind the barbed wire fences of the "relocation" centers in which they and their families were imprisoned. The 442nd became what Army Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall called "the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in history." This book is particularly poignant because rather than just being a statistical documentary, it is built around the stories of individual heroics. Also valuable and moving is the fact that it includes the award citations for all of the soldiers who were awarded the Medal of Honor and the Army's second highest award for combat heroism, the Distinguished Service Cross. I am proud to let everyone know that my uncle, Ted Ikari, served as a member of the 442nd.

Not great writing for ease of reading, but a foundational story of human nature. The book does a good job of capturing war time experience. I was hoping this update would provide details of their post-war struggle to obtain an apology from the U.S. government for the policy of internment and be told 'no' and met with the same will brought into battle. That would be as important a story to tell.

A good book for people who are not familiar with the record of the 1100/442nd Regimental Combat Team, the most highly decorated military unit for its size and length of service in the history of the US military.

Very earnest telling of the Battle history of the 100th battallion and the 442RCT

I found this book to be written much in the style of Ambrose, with a very earnest voice and stirring pace. While this work would benefit from some additional editing, it is a very well told story. The bulk of the work describes the battle history of the 100th battalion and the 442RCT, interspersed with personal anecdotes and details on individual soldiers, actions or historical context. All in all, a very worthwhile read.

This is an excellent, quick read of the extreme sacrifice made by first generation Japanese-Americans who served in the Army in Europe and the Pacific. It's a very thoroughly researched and well written story of the sacrifices made by our Japanese-Americans to defend enemies of their adopted country. The unit of Nisei (first generation) served with uncommon valor in the American assault on Italy and Germany.
